Providing Public Access to Cultural and Community Spaces at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic
Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta is committed to strengthening cultural participation, preserving religious and intellectual traditions, and promoting community engagement by providing public access to selected University buildings and facilities.
The University recognises that academic institutions have an important role in supporting local cultural heritage and providing spaces where communities can participate in educational, cultural, religious, and intellectual activities.
During 2024–2025, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic demonstrated this commitment through public programmes at the Harun Nasution Auditorium and Fathullah Mosque, two significant venues associated with the University's intellectual, religious, and community traditions.

1. Providing Public Access to the Harun Nasution Auditorium
The Harun Nasution Auditorium is one of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic principal academic and cultural venues.
The building serves as a location for university ceremonies, scholarly discussions, public lectures, cultural performances, and community engagement activities.
Its name honours Harun Nasution, an influential Indonesian Islamic intellectual whose legacy is closely associated with the development of Islamic higher education and critical intellectual thought in Indonesia.
The Auditorium therefore holds significance within the University's institutional and intellectual heritage.
During 2024, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic provided public access to this venue through several cultural and educational programmes involving people from outside the University.
These activities demonstrate that the Auditorium serves not only internal academic functions but also acts as a meeting space for the wider community.

2. Opening University Cultural Spaces through the Ciputat Membaca Festival
From 4 to 6 December 2024, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic Institute for Research and Community Service (LP2M) collaborated with local intellectual and literacy communities to organise the Ciputat Membaca Festival.
The programme was held at the Harun Nasution Auditorium.
The festival focused on strengthening reading culture and preserving the intellectual traditions of Ciputat, an area recognised for its contribution to Indonesian Islamic scholarship and public intellectual discourse.
The opening programme was attended by approximately 350 participants, including University students and members of the public.
The collaboration involved 17 community organisations and literacy networks, including student associations, reading communities, independent publishing groups, and local intellectual organisations.
The festival featured literacy discussions, publishing-related activities, and community dialogue.
On 5 December 2024, the second day of the programme attracted 288 participants from the University and the wider public.
Through this initiative, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic opened its cultural and academic facilities to community participation and encouraged the exchange of knowledge across institutional boundaries.
The festival provides documented evidence of public access to a University venue associated with its intellectual heritage.

3. Preserving Religious and Cultural Traditions at Fathullah Mosque
Fathullah Mosque is an important religious and community facility associated with Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic.
The mosque supports Islamic worship, religious education, and community gatherings involving students, lecturers, religious scholars, and members of the surrounding public.
On 19 September 2024, the mosque hosted an event commemorating the birth of Prophet Muhammad and the Haul of Sheikh Syarif Hidayatullah.
The programme included traditional Islamic devotional activities such as collective prayers, remembrance of God (dhikr), Qur'anic recitations, and blessings upon the Prophet (salawat).
The event was attended by hundreds of participants and explicitly invited members of the wider community alongside University personnel and students.
These practices represent elements of Indonesia's living Islamic religious traditions.
By facilitating community participation at Fathullah Mosque, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic supports public engagement with religious practices and the continued transmission of cultural and spiritual traditions.
The event demonstrates that the mosque functions as a community-accessible venue rather than a facility exclusively reserved for University members.

4. Hosting Cultural Performances and Public Exhibitions
The Harun Nasution Auditorium also served as a location for cultural activities organised in collaboration with national government institutions.
On 24 December 2024, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic and Indonesia's Ministry of Religious Affairs organised the International Anti-Corruption Day Festival, known as Hakordia 2024.
The programme included a public integrity exhibition, national dialogue, cultural performances, musical activities, and poetry presentations.
Through this programme, the University provided a venue for cultural expression, civic education, and interaction between academic institutions, government representatives, and the wider public.
The event demonstrated how University facilities can support cultural activities and public engagement beyond routine teaching and research.

5. Supporting Local Cultural and Intellectual Heritage
Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic contribution to cultural heritage extends beyond the physical availability of buildings.
By organising public programmes, the University creates opportunities for communities to engage with cultural practices, intellectual discussions, and religious traditions.
The Harun Nasution Auditorium supports activities related to the intellectual history of Ciputat and public cultural expression.
Fathullah Mosque provides a setting for community participation in Islamic religious traditions.
These complementary functions strengthen the University's relationship with surrounding communities and support the continuing relevance of culturally significant institutional spaces.
The documented events demonstrate that public access to selected University buildings can contribute to cultural participation and the preservation of living traditions.
6. Maintaining Public Access through Organised Programmes
Public access to University buildings is provided according to the nature of the facility and the activities taking place.
Certain venues are made available to external participants through organised cultural, religious, educational, and community events.
This approach allows the University to balance public participation with the academic, administrative, safety, and operational requirements of its facilities.
The documented events during 2024 demonstrate that selected University venues were accessible to members of the public for cultural and community purposes.
However, the available records do not establish unrestricted public access to every significant University building at all times.
The evidence therefore supports a classification of Some Free Access, rather than unrestricted access to all significant buildings.
