Will South Tangerang Government Greenlight the Critical Pedestrian Bridge Connecting UIN Jakarta and Its Hospital?
Rectorate Building, UIN Online News – UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta is finalizing coordination and awaiting further action from the South Tangerang (Tangsel) Municipal Government regarding the construction of a pedestrian overpass, locally known as JPO, in front of Campus I on the busy Ir. H. Juanda highway in Ciputat.
The Head of the Information and Public Relations Center at UIN Jakarta, Zaenal Muttaqin, stated that the overpass project is currently undergoing coordination following a jointly approved relocation study.
He further noted that UIN Jakarta has prepared initial requirements, including conceptual designs, for consideration. However, the actual construction process is pending follow-up from the Tangsel local government, particularly regarding permits and technical implementation.
"In principle, UIN Jakarta is fully prepared to support the acceleration of this overpass project. We continue to coordinate actively with the Tangsel Municipal Government, especially regarding licensing and further technical coordination with relevant stakeholders," he said on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
Zaenal added that as a form of commitment, UIN Jakarta allocated approximately IDR 7 billion in 2025 to fund the project, although the budget was later affected by institutional efficiency adjustments.
"Despite the budget restructuring, the initial allocation demonstrates the university's serious commitment to providing safe crossing facilities for our academic community and the general public," he emphasized.
According to Zaenal, the overpass is a vital piece of infrastructure. The highway below is a high-density thoroughfare connecting the provinces of Jakarta, Banten, and West Java, making a dedicated pedestrian bridge absolutely necessary to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow. The highway is designed strictly for vehicular transit, making street-level crossing highly hazardous for pedestrians moving between the main campus and the UIN Jakarta Hospital.
Previously, UIN Jakarta, the Tangsel Municipal Government, and corporate vendors assessed a plan to relocate an underutilized existing overpass nearby. The plan aims to move it to a strategic spot directly in front of the campus entrance, optimization utilization for both locals and students.
The urgency of this project is underscored by the massive daily volume of commuters on Ir. H. Juanda highway, which serves as a major artery linking Ciputat in South Tangerang to Pasar Jumat in South Jakarta. The overpass is expected to significantly eliminate pedestrian-vehicle conflicts, lower accident risks, and improve overall traffic management.
Furthermore, UIN Jakarta hopes that this synergy between academia, local government, and the private sector can be strengthened to accelerate the project.
"We hope this process can be expedited and successfully realized within 2026 so that the overpass can immediately benefit the community," Zaenal added.
Aside from serving as a safety measure, the planned overpass will incorporate modern architectural aesthetics and potentially serve as a platform for institutional information. This dual purpose will ensure the structure is not only functional but also enhances the campus's modern image.
UIN Jakarta remains committed to pushing for the swift realization of this overpass as a concrete solution for safe, orderly, and accessible campus infrastructure.
"We are doing this solely to ensure that our campus environment infrastructure fully supports a safe and secure academic climate," he concluded.
