Webinar MSKI UIN Jakarta Explores the Reformism of Syaikh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau

FAH Building, UIN Online News - The Master's Program in History and Islamic Civilization (MSKI) at the Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) of UIN Jakarta held a webinar titled “Meninjau Kembali Reformisme Syaikh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau” on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.

Dr. Ade Abdul Hak, M.Hum., CIQNB., Dean of FAH UIN Jakarta, in his opening remarks via Zoom Meeting, emphasized the importance of exploring the values and history of Syaikh Ahmad Khatib, especially in the current era. "It is hoped that the experiences and journey of Syaikh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau can serve as lessons for us," he said.

In line with the Head of the MSKI Program at UIN Jakarta, Prof. Dr. Jajat Burhanuddin, M.A., expressed gratitude and hoped for continued exploration of the historical Islamic legacy in Indonesia. Syaikh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau is known as the teacher of the founders of two of Indonesia's largest Islamic organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah.

In addition to being attended by students from various disciplines, the webinar was also graced by Prof. Endang Rochmiatun, S.Ag., M.Hum, Dean of FAH UIN Raden Fatah Palembang, and representatives from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Ridwan Nurman Khalis.

Ahmad Fauzi Ilyas, LC, M.S.I, Director of PuSNUN STIT Ar-Raudlatul Hasanah Medan, as the speaker, presented the biography and reformism of Syaikh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau. "Several writings have identified Syaikh Ahmad Khatib as a reformist," said Ahmad Fauzi.

Among the issues discussed were the inheritance in Minangkabau, the Naqshbandiyya order, and Friday prayers in Palembang. These three aspects refer to indicators that rely more on Quranic and Hadith evidence.

One notable opinion of Syaikh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau is his prohibition against using drums (kentongan) to announce prayer times, based on Hadith prohibitions due to similarities with Christian practices and the juristic prohibition on non-Muslims displaying drums in Islamic lands. Ahmad Fauzi also noted that the use of a drum (beduk) is permissible.

Following the presentation by the speakers, the webinar concluded with a discussion involving questions and additional contributions from the webinar participants.
