Wastewater Treatment: A Process in Place to Treat Wastewater

Wastewater Treatment: A Process in Place to Treat Wastewater

Recycling wastewater reduces freshwater consumption and environmental impact. Indicator WR.3 in the Water category of UI GreenMetric assesses the implementation of a water recycling program. This program aims to treat wastewater, reuse the reclaimed water, and continuously monitor water quality at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University.

Wastewater from laboratories, toilets, ablution areas, and other campus facilities is treated at the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP/IPAL), which operates continuously every day and runs at a minimum operational load on weekends to keep the biological processes stable. The recycling network covers Campus 1, Campus 2, and the Faculty of Medicine. Maintenance includes weekly inspections and monthly effluent quality testing, evaluated against Ministry of Environment and Forestry regulations on domestic wastewater quality standards (No. P.68/Menlhk-Setjen/2016 and No. 11 of 2025). The treated water is stored in a reclaimed water tank and reused for landscape irrigation and other non-potable purposes. Multifunctional fish ponds support water circulation, and air conditioner condensate water is collected and reused.
