UIN Jakarta to confer an honorary doctorate to Lies Marcos

Rectorate, UIN News Online – UIN Jakarta will confer an honorary doctorate (Doktor Honoris Causa) to the one of Indonesia's leading experts on Islam and gender, Lies Marcos. The honorary doctoral conferment ceremony will be held to coincide with the international seminar titled “Peran Perempuan Dalam Era Society 5.0” on Wednesday,(12/22/2021) at the Harun Nasution Auditorium, campus I of UIN Jakarta.

The awarding of the HC Doctorate to Lies Marcos due to her role in its role in the gender equality movement in Indonesia by bridging the gap between Muslims and secular feminists. Through her various efforts, she has contributed a lot in changing the way society views on women in Islam. He did this by becoming a facilitator for various activities in various regions.

Lies Marcoes studied at IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah (now UIN Jakarta -ed), focusing on comparative religion studies. Then she continued his master's degree at the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands), majoring in Anthropology of Health.

During that time, Lies became acquainted with researchers and activists who encourage her to learn more about gender and feminism. These figures are Martin van Bruinessen and women activists such as Saskia Wieringa, Mies Grijns, and Julia Suryakusuma.

In addition, Lies is also active in activities related to pesantren. She founded the al-nisa fiqh division at the Islamic Boarding School and Community Development Association (P3M).

Lies is also active as an independent consultant in various international institutions. In addition, through this institution, Lies is also actively and consistently involved in conducting research, being a resource person and advisor to various programs around reproductive health issues and family planning in various Muslim communities in Asia.

Apart from being an activist, Lies is also active in writing. One of the books she wrote is entitled “Merebut Tafsir”. The book contains about how the lives of men and women are carried out in society and how patriarchal culture is legitimized and also hegemoned by invisible forces. (usa/vrssrc)
