UIN Jakarta Strengthens Archival Governance Through Institutional and HR Empowerment
Senate Room, UIN News Online – UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta is strengthening its archival governance through institutional development, enhancing archivists' competencies, and planning the establishment of an archive museum. These measures form part of reinforcing archive management as an institutional track record and a source of historical information for the university. This commitment was highlighted during the Administration Dissemination for Archives themed “Enhancing Archival Governance,” held in the Senate Room of UIN Jakarta, Tuesday (22/9/2026).
The event was attended by the Head of the General Bureau of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Aceng Abdul Aziz, S.Ag., M.Pd.; Rector of UIN Jakarta, Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, M.A., Ph.D.; Head of the General Administration and Personnel Bureau (AUK) of UIN Jakarta, Dr. Nanang Fatchurochman, S.H., S.Pd., M.Pd.; Head of General Affairs Division, Dr. Arif Rahman, S.Th.I., M.Pd.; Head of the Quality Assurance Institute, Prof. Dr. Khamami, S.H., M.A., M.DC.; Heads of Administrative Divisions from each faculty, archivists, and several members of UIN Jakarta's academic community. In addition, the event featured resource persons from the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI).
On the occasion, the Head of the General Bureau of the Ministry of Religious Affairs RI, Dr. Aceng Abdul Aziz, highlighted UIN Jakarta as one of the universities under the Ministry of Religious Affairs to respond first to the initiative of establishing a University Archives Institution (LKPT). According to him, the institution's existence will strengthen the university's authority in managing its own archives.
“It turns out UIN Jakarta was the very first to respond. Hopefully, this can be realized soon, as UIN Jakarta usually serves as a benchmark for other UINs across Indonesia,” expressed Dr. Aceng.
Efforts to strengthen archival management were also emphasized by the Rector of UIN Jakarta, Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar. In his remarks, he highlighted the need for guidance on preserving archives that record the university's historical journey. Furthermore, Prof. Asep stated that in these preservation efforts, several obstacles remain regarding tracing historical documents at UIN Jakarta.
“When we planned to build a museum, historical data and documents proved relatively difficult to find. This means that when we attempt to trace and track UIN's footsteps, that historical record remains dark,” he revealed.
As part of these efforts, UIN Jakarta plans to utilize the Madya Hall as a museum. This plan is expected to be a step forward in organizing and re-presenting archives that capture the institution's journey.
Strengthening archival practices does not stop at institutional aspects and historical preservation alone. Human resources and archivists' operational performance are also receiving attention. Head of the Quality Assurance Institute (LPM) at UIN Jakarta, Prof. Khamami Zada, noted that enhancing archival governance needs to be conducted comprehensively, both through boosting human resource competencies and improving overall performance.
“Archival governance or management at UIN Jakarta certainly needs to be elevated, both in terms of Human Resources (HR) and operational performance,” he explained.
Khamami added that UIN Jakarta has prepared quality improvement programs for functional positions, particularly archivists, through bachelor's and master's degree scholarship facilities. He revealed that the program is currently in its second year of implementation.
The importance of strengthening archive management was also conveyed during session 1 of the talk show by ANRI speaker, Mas Yanto Samadikun, S.Sos., M.I.P., who stated that archives serve not only as administrative documents, but also as part of an institution's accountability and historical record. During the session, Mas Yanto emphasized the critical role of organized archives in safeguarding an institution's reputation and public trust.
“The reputation and trust lost due to unorganized archives cannot be compensated by anything,” he asserted.
The agenda commenced with an opening session that included an activity report, remarks from the Rector, guidance from the General Bureau of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, a symbolic handover of the proposal for UIN Jakarta archive destruction, and the signing of a joint commitment to archival management. The program then proceeded with presentations on dynamic archive management delivered by ANRI speakers in two sessions, concluding with a group photo session.
Through this event, UIN Jakarta continues to strive toward advancing archival management that is not only administratively orderly, but also capable of safeguarding the university's historical legacy for future generations.
