UIN Jakarta Lecturers Performed Community Service in Banyuwangi to Improve Literacy
Banyuwangi, UIN News Online - Ketapang Village, Kalipuro Subdistrict, Banyuwangi, became the chosen location in community service activities held by lecturers of Communication and Islamic Broadcasting (KPI) Faculty of Da'wah and Communication Sciences (FDIKOM) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta on Wednesday (4/12). Collaborating with the Rumah Literasi Indonesia (RLI) community, this activity brings new expectations for the empowerment of the Banyuwangi community.
The activity coordinator, Dr. H.M. Yakub, M.A., in his speech affirmed the importance of cooperation between universities and local communities to answer national literacy challenges. “This collaboration is not only about literacy, but also empowerment in various aspects of life. We want to deliver real world effects,” he said.
An appreciative welcome was also delivered by the Head of KPI Study Program, Dr. Yopi Kusmiati, M.Si., who underlined the role of RLI in Banyuwangi as an inspiration. “Rumah Literasi Indonesia proves that with commitment, literacy can be an entrance to meaningful social change,” she said.
RLI Chairperson, Ns. Tunggul Harwanto, M.Kes., shared success stories of communities such as Posyandu Kerapu, which not only works in the health sector but also empowers teenagers and the elderly. He added that the media literacy training in this activity is expected to create useful local content. “We believe this training will be a momentum to develop media potential in the village,” he said.
The portrait of local empowerment is further complemented by creative initiatives such as Mrs Ati's waste recycling program and Mr Ahmadi's bamboo handicrafts that have penetrated the international market. However, technological limitations are still a major obstacle. “We hope for the government's aid to take this potential to the next level,” he added.
Rumah Literasi itself was born in 2014 in response to social issues such as child marriage and violence against women. Thanks to the dedication of Mrs. Nur Hikmah, a graduate of Jember University, the village is now an inspiring example of literacy-based transformation.
The activity which was also attended by KPI lecturers such as Muhammad Fanshoby, M.Sos., Zakaria, M.A., Iskandar Trilaksono, M.Si., Pia Khoirotunnisa, M.Ikom, Ade Masturi, MA, and Dr. Umi Musyarofah, M.Si., also involved UIN KPI Master students and BPI alumnus. The event was opened by Mrs. Susi, a representative of Ketapang Village officials, who expressed her support for this initiative.
With passion and cross-sector collaboration, Ketapang Village is now a symbol that literacy can be the foundation of sustainable social change. This event also paved the way for a community-based empowerment model that can be replicated in various regions in Indonesia.
