UIN Jakarta Inaugurates Integrated Waste Management Facility to Advance Sustainable Green Campus

Depok, UIN Online News — UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta has officially inaugurated its Integrated Independent Waste Management Facility (TPSTM), named KALIFA (Kelola Alam dan Lingkungan Berfaedah), at the university's PPG Campus. The inauguration marks a significant milestone in UIN Jakarta's commitment to building a sustainable Green Campus through an innovative, campus-based waste management system.

Established by the Center for Green Campus Development, TPSTM KALIFA is designed to enable the university to manage its waste independently while promoting environmental awareness among students, faculty members, and staff. More than a waste processing facility, KALIFA serves as a practical learning center where the academic community can engage directly in sustainable environmental practices.

Head of the Center for Green Campus Development, Prof. Dr. Hendrawati, M.Si., explained that the name KALIFA is derived from the Islamic concept of khalifah—a steward entrusted with caring for the Earth. Through this initiative, UIN Jakarta seeks to cultivate a sense of environmental responsibility across its academic community.

"KALIFA reflects the role of a khalifah—a leader and steward who consciously creates positive impacts for society. We hope every member of our academic community will become environmentally responsible and capable of managing waste wisely for the benefit of future generations," she said.

The facility has the capacity to process up to three tons of waste per day through an integrated management system. Waste is first sorted according to its type before undergoing different treatment processes. Recyclable materials such as plastic bottles, cardboard, and other valuable items are separated for recycling and creative reuse, while an automated sorting system distinguishes organic from inorganic waste.

Organic waste is processed into Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggot feed, supporting organic waste decomposition and circular resource utilization. Non-organic waste is converted into briquettes as an alternative energy source, while non-recyclable residual waste is safely treated using an incinerator. This comprehensive system significantly reduces waste sent to landfills while maximizing resource recovery.

The inauguration of TPSTM KALIFA represents a concrete step in implementing UIN Jakarta's long-term environmental sustainability agenda. The university envisions the facility as both an operational waste management center and an educational laboratory that supports research, community engagement, and environmental innovation.

Through KALIFA, UIN Jakarta aims to become a pioneer in implementing ecotheology within Indonesia's State Islamic Universities (PTKIN) by integrating Islamic values of environmental stewardship with practical sustainability initiatives. The university also expects the facility to inspire broader participation in responsible waste management as part of its ongoing Green Campus movement.
