UIN Jakarta Expands Electric Bus Fleet to Strengthen Green Campus Initiative

Rectorate Building, UIN Online News — UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta continues to advance its green campus agenda by adding three new electric buses at the end of 2025. With this addition, a total of six electric buses are now operating across Campus I to support the daily mobility of the academic community.

For students, the expanded electric bus fleet represents more than an improvement in transportation facilities. It symbolizes the university’s concrete commitment to environmental sustainability. Electric buses are considered more efficient and comfortable, while also aligning with efforts to reduce carbon emissions on campus. By adopting zero-emission vehicles, UIN Jakarta seeks to lower its carbon footprint, improve air quality, and reduce dependence on fossil-fuel-based transportation within the campus area.

Rector of UIN Jakarta, Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, M.A., Ph.D., stated that the additional buses are expected to enhance internal transportation services in response to increasing mobility needs.

“We hope that the additional electric buses will further optimize mobility services on campus. We also encourage all users to help maintain cleanliness and order so that the buses can be used longer and provide sustainable benefits,” the Rector said.

The new electric buses have been well received by students. Azka Raysa Pratama, a student of the Information Systems Program at the Faculty of Science and Technology, noted that the buses significantly ease student mobility, particularly for faculties located far from parking areas.

“I often park my motorcycle in the Triguna area, which is quite far from lecture buildings. The electric bus makes commuting much easier and more efficient, especially during peak hours when campus activities are very busy,” he explained.

Azka also praised UIN Jakarta’s continued efforts to improve student services. According to him, the expansion of the electric bus fleet demonstrates the university’s responsiveness to the needs of its academic community.

“I hope UIN Jakarta continues to innovate and prioritize student comfort. Programs like this are highly beneficial and should be maintained and further developed,” he added. He also suggested prioritizing bus usage for students with longer travel distances or urgent academic schedules to ensure optimal utilization.

Each new electric bus has a capacity of 23 passengers, including the driver, with a seven-row seating configuration. Following the handover process, the buses underwent trial operations around Campus I before being stationed at the designated Green Area of Electric Vehicles, located beside the Faculty of Dirasat Islamiyah building.

The operation of the electric buses is supported by a dedicated green vehicle zone equipped with charging stations within the campus integrated parking area. This zone is designed to ensure the sustainable operation of electric vehicles.

The electric buses operate on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. until classes conclude, ensuring smooth campus mobility following the implementation of a policy requiring fossil-fuel vehicles to be parked in the integrated parking area around Triguna.

In addition to electric buses, UIN Jakarta also provides electric motorcycles and electric bicycles as environmentally friendly transportation alternatives for short distances. Integrated parking policies, pedestrian pathways, and cycling lanes are part of the university’s broader strategy to promote non-motorized mobility and create a healthy, sustainable academic environment.

Through these initiatives, UIN Jakarta reaffirms its commitment to becoming a leading green campus in Indonesia and contributing meaningfully to global efforts in addressing climate change.
