UIN Jakarta Concludes 140th Commencement, Conferring Degrees on 1,557 Graduates
Harun Nasution Auditorium, UIN News Online — UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta concluded its 140th Commencement Ceremony by conferring degrees upon 1,557 graduates, marking another milestone in the university’s commitment to preparing future leaders and professionals for an increasingly dynamic world.
The second day of the commencement ceremony, held on Sunday (May 24, 2026), celebrated the graduation of 789 students from seven faculties: the Faculty of Sharia and Law, Faculty of Dirasat Islamiyah, Faculty of Psychology, Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, and Faculty of Medicine.
The ceremony was attended by UIN Jakarta Rector Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, M.A., Ph.D., Chairman of the Academic Senate Prof. Dr. KH. Dede Rosyada, M.A., members of the rectorate, deans, professors, and distinguished alumnus Dadi Darmadi, M.A., Ph.D., who served as the alumni representative.
In his address, Rector Prof. Asep described graduation as a significant milestone that opens new opportunities for personal and professional growth. He reminded graduates that every achievement begins with a small step and that higher education serves as a foundation for future contributions to society.
“Earning a university degree is an important achievement. It opens doors to new opportunities and prepares graduates to continue learning, growing, and contributing in various fields,” he said.
The Rector also acknowledged the dedication of lecturers and professors who guided students throughout their academic journey, describing their contribution as a lasting investment in future generations.
He encouraged graduates to share the knowledge and values they acquired during their studies and to use their education as a means of serving society.
Representing the graduating class, Devara Dipa Dirana, recipient of the Outstanding Graduate Award and Best Undergraduate Thesis Award from the Faculty of Economics and Business, emphasized that graduation should be viewed not as the end of a journey but as the beginning of a new chapter.
“Today is not merely about receiving a diploma or adding a title after our names. It marks the beginning of a new journey. We are graduating at a time when digitalization and artificial intelligence are transforming the world beyond traditional boundaries,” she said.
Devara also highlighted the importance of balancing intellectual excellence with ethical responsibility, arguing that Indonesia needs a generation capable of combining academic competence with strong values and character.
“In the midst of rapid change, our nation needs individuals who are not only academically capable but also resilient, principled, and committed to advancing the common good,” she added.
The ceremony also featured an address from alumni representative Dadi Darmadi, M.A., Ph.D., a distinguished anthropologist, senior researcher at the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM), and lecturer at UIN Jakarta.
Sharing his personal journey, Dadi reflected on how he never imagined that his academic path would eventually lead him to study abroad. Supported by a Fulbright Scholarship, he earned his first master's degree from the University of Colorado Boulder before later completing doctoral studies in Social Anthropology at Harvard University.
His story served as an inspiring example for graduates preparing to embark on their own professional and academic journeys.
In his message to the graduating class, Dadi encouraged them to remain hopeful and persistent in pursuing their aspirations.
“Success does not always come to those who are the most brilliant. Often, it comes to those who persevere longer, maintain their hope, and continue knocking on the doors of possibility,” he said.
He also reminded graduates never to underestimate their potential, regardless of their background or where they began their journey.
The commencement ceremony concluded with the symbolic transfer of tassels by the Rector, the presentation of diplomas by faculty deans, and the official induction of graduates into the UIN Jakarta alumni community.
With the completion of its 140th Commencement Ceremony, UIN Jakarta officially welcomed 1,557 new alumni, who now join a global network of graduates contributing to education, public service, business, research, healthcare, and community development both in Indonesia and beyond.
