UIN Jakarta and UINSU Medan Hold International Conference to Discuss the Integration of Religion and Science
Medan, UIN Online News — UIN Jakarta was partnering with UINSU Medan to organize the 8th International Colloquium on Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies (ICIIS) 2025, scheduled since August 18-21, 2025.
This inter-institutional event centers on the theme "Religion, Science and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Discourses and Practical Integrations" which showcased more than 175 domestic and international attendees who delivered their research publications.
In his introduction, the Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Dr. JM Muslimin, M.A., who also serves as the Head of the Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of UIN Jakarta, expressed appreciation for the successful colloquium, attributing it to the comprehensive support of the leaders from both universities.
“God bless, over 175 presenters are prepared to deliver their articles pertaining to religion, science, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Ladies and gentlemen, we also have honorable guests from international universities, including those from America, England, Germany, Lebanon, and Pakistan," Prof. Dr. JM Muslimin, M.A., addressed.
He disclosed that the colloquium was collaboratively organized by UIN Jakarta and UIN Sumatera Utara to enhance international academic networks and promote interdisciplinary research.
"Inshaallah, this collaboration will persist and evolve, yielding tangible advantages for the broader community," he continued.
In her address, the Rector of UINSU Medan articulated her pride in the effective execution of this international academic forum, which reinforces the strategic commitment to the role of Islamic colleges.
"This collaboration signifies a genuine dedication to advancing interdisciplinary research and producing innovations rooted in Islamic values that serve societal interests," Prof. Dr. Nurhayati, M.Ag., stated.
Moreover, she urged the academic community to abolish the distinction between religious and secular sciences.
"All knowledge belongs to Allah, and we must make the best out of it to establish a superior civilization. We can start from Islamic universities, which should serve as laboratories of civilization, fostering both innovative ideas and practical solutions," she added.
The Rector of UIN underscored the necessity of reexamining the interplay between religion and science in contemporary society since some are rejecting the idea of a technological leap, which is perceived as a threat.
"This colloquium is anticipated to yield not only academic publications but also tangible solutions regarding health concerns, economic issues, and the global environmental disaster for society," Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, M.A., conveyed.
According to him, the significance of cultivating an intellectual atmosphere results in an inclusive, balanced, tolerant, and adaptable civilization.
"This will enhance the relevance of Islamic universities in tackling global challenges," he said before commencing the program with the recitation of basmalah.
This occasion featured not only academic discussions but also the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the Postgraduate Program and the Islamic Services Study Center (PUSLAIN) of UINSU Medan and the Postgraduate Program of UIN Jakarta.
The relationship encompasses joint research, professor and student exchanges, and the enhancement of worldwide scientific publications while representing actual progress in enhancing inter-institutional collaboration of Islamic universities within the global academic framework.
ICIIS 2025 is an important event where academics, researchers, and students can come together to share ideas and expand their global connections, focusing on the combination of religion, science, and sustainable development to create a better society.
