UIN Jakarta and BPKN Sign MoU to Strengthen Consumer Protection

Rectorate Building, UIN Online News - To improve consumer protection awareness and activism, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Consumer Protection Agency (BPKN) on Thursday (27/02/2025) in the 2nd Floor Main Meeting Hall.

The agreement was executed by the Rector of UIN Jakarta, Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, M.A., Ph.D., and the Chairman of BPKN, Dr. Muhammad Mufti Mubarok, B.L., B.Soc., M.Sc., with officials from the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas).

Asep Saepudin Jahar addressed the lack of consumer protection in Indonesia, especially in the cosmetic products, goods and services, and waste management sectors. The prevalent distribution of counterfeit cosmetics, rampant consumption of products and services, and the likelihood of significant waste underscore the need for more consumer education.

"Let us collaborate henceforth to address one of the people's greatest issues: consumer protection. This signature significantly contributes to the preservation of others' rights, hence why I sign this letter to advocate for consumer protection literacy in our society and UIN Jakarta's civitas," he stated.

Furthermore, the rector of UIN Jakarta revealed his plan to integrate consumer education into the curriculum. He defined a well-educated consumer as an individual who comprehends their rights and responsibilities, critically evaluates items that fail to comply with consumer protection standards, actively observes the flow of goods in the domestic market, and recognizes their avenues for rights restitution.

Consequently, Mufti Mubarok expressed his gratitude for UIN Jakarta's intention to partner with BPKN in enhancing consumer protection: "As the preeminent state Islamic university, UIN Jakarta undoubtedly exerts considerable influence acknowledged by consumers.".

The Chairman of BPKN explained that the National Consumer Protection Agency (BPKN) is the principal organization for ensuring dignified customers and accountable corporate entities. It addresses primary categories of consumer protection, covering all facets of life from marriage to death.

Responsible business actors are those who professionally meet their commitments to foster a healthy business environment, adhering to safety, health, security, and environmental sustainability. With this effort, UIN Jakarta, together with the National Consumer Protection Agency, nurtures both entrepreneurs and their consumers on a micro business level.
