Three students of UIN Jakarta receive KH Abdurrahman Wahid scholarship

FAH, UIN News Online – Three students of UIN Jakarta receive KH Abdurrahmad Wahid (Gus Dur) scholarship. The scholarships were awarded in collaboration with the Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) UIN Jakarta and the Wahid Foundation for students who wrote about Gus Dur's work and thoughts. The scholarship was symbolically handed over by the Dean of FAH UIN Jakarta Saiful Umam witnessed by the Executive Director of the Wahid Foundation Mujtaba Hamdi at the FAH Building, Friday (04/30/2021).

The three scholarship recipients were Desi Anggraini from the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, Dila Wahyuni from the Faculty of Adab and Humanities, and Jufri from the Faculty of Ushuluddin.

Dean of FAH of UIN Jakarta Saiful Umam in his remarks expressed his appreciation for the achievements of the three students.

“We hope that the scholarship can encourage and motivate UIN Jakarta students to write more deeply about Gus Dur's work and thoughts in various aspects,” he said.

On the same occasion, the Rector of UIN JakartaAmany Lubis appreciates FAH and Wahid Foundation for collaborating to provide scholarships. sHe hopes that this scholarship can motivate students to do more serious research.

The scholarship program itself was held in conjunction with a public lecture delivered by Professor George Quinn from the Australian National University. Quinn, who is an expert on Javanese language and literature from Australia and author of the book Bandit Saints of Java, said that Gus Dur was an extraordinary figure for the Javanese and Indonesian Muslim community.

In addition to having led one of the largest Islamic organizations Nahdlatul Ulama and the President of the Republic of Indonesia 1999-2001, Gus Dur was also considered an important figure among Indonesian Muslims.

“Gus Dur's unique features emphasized his clever figure, including in his political activities. "Even according to Professor Greg Feally, his success as President of the Republic of Indonesia proves that he is good at politics with various tactics and has unpredictable political acrobatics.” Quinn said.

Meanwhile, Rector Amany added that Gus Dur was a phenomenal figure. One thing she remembered was when Gus Dur asked Professor Nabilah Lubis, her mother, to deliver a religious sermon during the Nuzulul Quran activity at the Istiqlal Mosque.

In addition, when Rector Amany was assigned to be a translator for Gus Dur's wife Sinta Nuriyah Wahid while accompanying her husband on trips to several Middle Eastern countries. Throughout the trip, Gus Dur emphasized the importance of religious harmony in Indonesia and the world as the basis for the harmonious life of mankind. (usa/zm)
