The Inspiring Journey of Mafatihatul Maghfirah, From Student Entrepreneur to Outstanding Graduate
Harun Nasution Auditorium, UIN Online News — Academic excellence and financial independence rarely come hand in hand during university years. Yet for Mafatihatul Maghfirah, an Arabic Language and Literature graduate at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, the two became defining features of her remarkable journey.
At UIN Jakarta’s 140th Commencement Ceremony, Mafatihatul, affectionately known as Mafa, was recognized as one of the university’s Outstanding Graduates. Behind the honor, however, lies a story of perseverance, entrepreneurship, and unwavering determination.
Originally from Madura, East Java, Mafa left her hometown to pursue higher education in Jakarta. From the very beginning, she set ambitious goals for herself.
“Since my first semester, I told myself that I wanted to be among the best. It would be a waste to leave home and study far away without striving for excellence,” she recalled.
That mindset became the foundation of her academic success. Throughout her studies, she consistently maintained outstanding grades while actively pursuing opportunities beyond the classroom.
What makes her achievement even more remarkable is her commitment to financial independence. Beginning in her second semester, Mafa started generating income to help cover her educational expenses, reducing the financial burden on her family.
Through her small business brand, Kedai Kita, which she promoted on TikTok and Instagram, she produced and sold a variety of homemade snacks, including risoles, brownies, and sticky rice cakes. Some of her products even gained significant attention online.
As graduation approached, she became increasingly focused on expanding the business to meet tuition and graduation-related expenses.
“There is no room for pride or embarrassment in entrepreneurship as long as the work is honest and halal,” she said.
Mafa’s achievements extended beyond academics and business. She was also selected to participate in an International Community Service Program, a self-funded initiative requiring both financial preparation and personal commitment.
Determined not to let financial constraints limit her opportunities, she actively sought sponsorships by reaching out to various institutions and stakeholders. Her efforts paid off, earning support from multiple sources, including university partners, government officials, and her family.
One of the defining moments of her academic journey came during her sixth semester when she decided to pursue UIN Jakarta’s accelerated graduation pathway through academic publication rather than a traditional undergraduate thesis.
Her research, titled “A Comparative Study of Macro- and Microstructures in al-Muʿjam al-Wasīṭ, Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, and Great Dictionary of the Indonesian Language: Implications for Digital Lexicography,” enabled her to complete her degree through the journal publication track.
Motivated by encouragement from her department chair, who believed she had the potential to become an outstanding graduate if she completed the program within seven semesters, Mafa embraced the challenge wholeheartedly.
Her determination paid off. She graduated in just seven semesters and earned recognition as one of the university’s top graduates.
Reflecting on her journey, Mafa shared a lesson she hopes other students will carry with them.
“Never underestimate small things. One hundred thousand rupiah can never exist without one hundred rupiah.”
For her, success is built through seemingly minor habits that many students overlook, arriving on time, paying attention in class, respecting commitments, and maintaining discipline in daily routines.
While such actions may appear insignificant, she believes they are the building blocks of character and long-term success.
Mafa’s story serves as a reminder that achievement is rarely the result of a single breakthrough. Rather, it is often the accumulation of small, consistent efforts, sustained over time with determination, humility, and purpose.
