Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Promotes a Public Pledge Toward 100% Renewable Energy Beyond the University

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta has reaffirmed its commitment to the clean energy transition through a pledge toward 100 percent renewable energy. The pledge is not limited to campus grounds. It is also meant to encourage similar action across the wider community.

The commitment was formalized under Rector’s Decree No. 1415 of 2024 and Circular Letter No. 21 of 2024, and aligns with UI GreenMetric standards. Its goals are to build scalable renewable energy infrastructure, forge public-private partnerships in clean energy, and serve as a model for low-carbon energy transition in broader society. As a concrete step, the university signed an official partnership agreement with PT Agra Surya Energi to develop a 270.17 kWp Rooftop Solar PV system integrated with the PLN grid. Solar panels are now operating at the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) and the Faculty of Educational Sciences (FITK), while installations at the Rectorate and the Main Auditorium are still underway.

Beyond rooftop solar, the campus operates 396 solar-powered streetlights along its main roads and outdoor parking areas. The lights run off-grid, independent of the electricity network. For backup generators, the university has switched to biosolar, a blend of fossil diesel and Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME).

The results are reflected in the data. In 2026, total renewable energy production reached 1,542,323.90 kWh. Biosolar for backup generators made up the largest share at 910,513.30 kWh, followed by solar-powered streetlights at 481,925 kWh. Rooftop solar panels at the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) and the Faculty of Educational Sciences (FITK) contributed 91,043.98 kWh and 58,841.62 kWh, respectively.

Solar output surged 172.6 percent at FST and 181.1 percent at FITK. According to the unit’s report, this expansion helps cut campus carbon emissions and reduce dependence on grid electricity. Looking ahead, the university plans to complete the full 270.17 kWp rooftop installation across all designated buildings, explore additional off-grid solar infrastructure, and strengthen its role in local and national policy forums. System performance is continuously monitored through metering systems.
