Supporting Student Food Security and Access to Essential Nutrition
Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta recognizes that students' ability to participate fully in higher education is closely connected to their ability to meet essential daily living needs, including access to adequate food. For this reason, the University supports student food security through a combination of structured living-cost assistance, financial support for economically disadvantaged students, and direct food-provision activities within the campus community.
Living-Cost Support for Economically Disadvantaged Students
One of the University's principal mechanisms for reducing financial pressure on students is the Kartu Indonesia Pintar Kuliah (KIP Kuliah) scholarship. Under the program implemented at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta, eligible students receive support for both tuition and daily living expenses.
The scholarship provides IDR 2.4 million per semester for educational costs and an additional IDR 4.2 million per semester for living costs, resulting in total assistance of IDR 6.6 million per semester for eligible recipients. Living-cost assistance helps students meet essential everyday expenses during their studies and reduces the risk that financial hardship will interfere with their ability to remain enrolled and participate in university life.
Direct Food Provision for Students
In addition to financial assistance, the University also provides food directly through campus-based community and religious activities. During Ramadan 2025, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta organised a university-wide iftar gathering attended by students and members of the academic community at the Al-Jami'ah Mosque and Student Center.
Food-provision activities during Ramadan provide students, particularly those spending their daily activities or living around the campus, with access to meals while strengthening social solidarity within the University community. These activities complement longer-term financial support by providing direct access to food during periods of increased daily expenditure.
Integrating Financial and Food Support
Student food insecurity can result from a range of pressures, including limited household income, accommodation costs, transportation expenses, tuition obligations, and the general cost of living while studying away from home. Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta therefore addresses these challenges through more than one mechanism.
The University's approach includes scholarship support, living-cost assistance, tuition assistance, philanthropic funding, and direct food-related activities. Together, these mechanisms help reduce economic pressures that may affect students' ability to access adequate food and continue their studies.
Supporting Students Throughout Their Studies
The University's approach to student welfare recognises that educational access does not end when a student is admitted. Students must also be able to meet essential living needs throughout their period of study.
Through structured living-cost support and direct food provision, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta seeks to create a more inclusive educational environment in which financial hardship does not prevent students from accessing food, participating in academic life, or progressing toward graduation.
