Strengthening Student Mental Health through Counselling, Psychological Support, and Well-Being Programmes

Strengthening Student Mental Health through Counselling, Psychological Support, and Well-Being Programmes

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta is committed to promoting students' mental health and psychological well-being through accessible counselling services, professional psychological assistance, peer-support initiatives, early identification of mental-health concerns, and campus-wide educational programmes. Recognising that mental well-being is essential to academic achievement, personal development, and students' overall quality of life, the University has established dedicated psychological support services and implemented programmes that encourage students to seek assistance when experiencing emotional, social, personal, or academic difficulties.

During 2024–2025, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta actively implemented student mental-health support through institutional counselling services, trained academic counsellors, psychological-well-being programmes, mental-health awareness seminars, and student-led psychological health campaigns. These initiatives demonstrate that the University's commitment extends beyond raising awareness to providing structured support mechanisms through which students can access guidance, counselling, and professional assistance.

1. Providing Dedicated Psychological Counselling through the Student Psychological Well-Being Service

One of the University's principal mechanisms for supporting student mental health is the Layanan Kesejahteraan Psikologis Mahasiswa (LKPM), or Student Psychological Well-Being Service, operated by the Faculty of Psychology. LKPM is a dedicated University service that assists Faculty of Psychology students experiencing psychological difficulties and supports their ability to maintain healthy emotional, social, and academic functioning. The service provides an organised pathway for students seeking counselling and psychological assistance.

Students can access the service through a formal registration procedure involving consultation with their academic supervisor, submission of a counselling registration form, and scheduling with the LKPM team. This procedure helps connect students experiencing personal or psychological difficulties with appropriate support. LKPM plays an important role in helping students respond to academic stress, emotional challenges, interpersonal problems, adjustment difficulties, and other psychological concerns that may affect their university experience. The service is also designed to improve students' psychological well-being so they can participate more effectively in academic and non-academic activities.

Its continued operation and public presentation during UIN Jakarta Expose 2025 demonstrate the University's commitment to maintaining a dedicated student-support structure rather than relying exclusively on occasional mental-health events. Through LKPM, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta provides an established mechanism for students to seek psychological counselling and access institutional mental-health assistance.

2. Expanding Student Counselling through Pojok Curhat Tarbiyah

In addition to LKPM, the University provides faculty-based counselling through Pojok Curhat Tarbiyah, an initiative of the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training. Pojok Curhat Tarbiyah was established to help students address personal, social, academic, and emotional difficulties that may interfere with their well-being and educational progress.

The service recognises that university students can experience multiple pressures, including academic workload, difficulties adapting to campus life, interpersonal conflict, uncertainty about the future, and other challenges requiring counselling or psychological support. During the 2024–2025 reporting period, the Faculty continued developing this service through counsellor training, institutional collaboration, and student-support activities. On 28–29 February 2024, Pojok Curhat Tarbiyah organised a workshop to strengthen the counselling skills of faculty lecturers serving as student counsellors. The training focused on counselling procedures, psychological assessment, responding appropriately to students' concerns, and creating supportive environments where students could communicate their difficulties.

The University's official reporting published in March 2024 documented that 33 students had participated in counselling sessions with 17 faculty counsellors through the programme's weekly consultation activities. The report also described a student mental-health seminar attended by 1,259 students, demonstrating the programme's ability to engage a substantial student audience in psychological well-being education. In February 2025, the Pojok Curhat Tarbiyah team visited the Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Negeri Jakarta to explore cooperation and improve student counselling services. These activities demonstrate the University's continuing investment in strengthening its counselling capacity, supporting lecturers who assist students, and developing partnerships that improve the quality of psychological support. Pojok Curhat Tarbiyah provides additional evidence that student mental-health assistance is implemented through faculty-level counselling services and ongoing professional-development activities.

3. Promoting Mental Health Awareness and Psychological Resilience among Students

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta also actively promotes positive mental health through educational programmes addressing common psychological challenges faced by university students. On 13 June 2025, the Agribusiness Study Programme of the Faculty of Science and Technology organised an online Mental Health Awareness Seminar under the theme “Mental Health ≥ Physical Health: Strategies for Maintaining Mental Health During University Studies.”

The programme involved students and members of the academic community from different study programmes. A professional counsellor from MMHC Clinic delivered educational material covering psychological challenges during university life, including stress, anxiety, depression, and emotional difficulties. The seminar also addressed the risks of self-diagnosis, strategies for maintaining psychological well-being, and the importance of recognising when professional help may be necessary. Interactive discussion and question-and-answer sessions enabled participants to explore concerns relating to student life and receive preliminary guidance.

The programme highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between psychological and physical health and encouraged students to adopt healthier approaches to academic and personal challenges. By organising this programme, the University promoted mental-health literacy and encouraged students to take an active role in protecting their psychological well-being. The June 2025 seminar demonstrates active institutional promotion of good mental health through preventive education, expert guidance, and student engagement.

4. Implementing Mental Health Campaigns, Stress Screening, and Creative Well-Being Activities

The University's commitment to mental-health promotion was further demonstrated through PsyWellness 2025, organised by the Student Executive Board of the Faculty of Psychology to commemorate World Mental Health Day.

Held on 9–10 October 2025, the programme carried the theme “Mind's in Motion: An Artistic Journey to Wellness.” The initiative brought mental-health awareness into public student spaces through interactive campaigns, creative activities, stress screening, and psychological education. A Mental Health Campaign was organised at Taman Tarbiyah, Campus 1, on 9 October 2025. Interactive activities included the House of Feelings, Puzzle of Life, Future Me, Motivation Box, and other educational booths designed to encourage participants to recognise, understand, and express their emotions in constructive ways. The programme also offered stress screening using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, helping participants reflect on potential signs of psychological distress.

A poster competition focusing on coping mechanisms encouraged students to communicate strategies for handling stress and emotional challenges. The competition involved participants from the Faculty of Psychology and other faculties. In addition, a seminar and art-therapy workshop introduced creative approaches to emotional expression, stress management, and psychological well-being. Through these activities, the University created opportunities for students to discuss mental health in an approachable and supportive environment. The programme helped promote awareness, encourage emotional expression, introduce positive coping strategies, and reduce barriers to discussing psychological difficulties. PsyWellness 2025 demonstrates that Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta actively promotes student mental health through campaigns, stress screening, educational activities, and participatory well-being programmes.

5. Strengthening Preventive, Supportive, and Responsive Mental-Health Services

PsyWellness 2025: Coping lewat Warna, Healing lewat Karya

The University's mental-health support framework combines several complementary approaches designed to respond to different student needs.

Preventive Support

Preventive activities help students recognise emotional difficulties and understand strategies for maintaining psychological well-being before problems become more severe. These include mental-health awareness seminars, psychological education, stress screening, and activities promoting healthier coping mechanisms.

Counselling and Psychological Assistance

Students experiencing difficulties can seek support through dedicated faculty-based services such as LKPM and Pojok Curhat Tarbiyah. These services provide structured routes for discussing personal, academic, social, and emotional concerns with designated counsellors or psychological-support personnel.

Counsellor Capacity Development

The University strengthens support services by developing counselling competencies among lecturers and student-support personnel. The February 2024 Pojok Curhat Tarbiyah training and February 2025 institutional collaboration activities demonstrate continued efforts to improve the effectiveness of counselling services.

Student Participation and Mental-Health Promotion

Student-led programmes such as PsyWellness 2025 encourage students to become active participants in campus mental-health promotion. These activities create opportunities for peer interaction, awareness building, early identification of psychological concerns, and the development of a more supportive campus environment. By combining counselling, prevention, education, and student participation, the University provides multiple channels through which students can receive psychological support and develop healthier approaches to mental well-being.

6. Improving Student Well-Being and Academic Resilience

Mental-health difficulties can affect students' concentration, academic engagement, interpersonal relationships, motivation, and ability to complete their studies successfully. Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta recognises these challenges and addresses them through services and programmes designed to support students throughout their university experience.

The University's psychological-support initiatives help students gain access to guidance when facing personal or emotional challenges. Mental-health education improves students' understanding of stress, anxiety, depression, and the importance of professional assistance. Peer-oriented campaigns and creative well-being activities encourage students to express emotions, communicate their experiences, and adopt constructive coping strategies. Counsellor training and institutional partnerships strengthen the University's capacity to respond to psychological concerns. Together, these initiatives contribute to a campus environment that recognises mental well-being as an essential component of student success and personal development.

7. Institutional Contribution to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being

The mental-health initiatives implemented by Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta during 2024–2025 demonstrate an established institutional approach to student psychological well-being.

Through the Student Psychological Well-Being Service (LKPM), the University provides a dedicated pathway for psychological counselling and assistance. Through Pojok Curhat Tarbiyah, it expands faculty-level support and strengthens the competencies of academic counsellors. Through the Mental Health Awareness Seminar 2025, it promotes knowledge about psychological challenges, stress management, and appropriate help-seeking.

Through PsyWellness 2025, it provides practical opportunities for mental-health education, stress screening, emotional expression, and student participation. Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta has therefore implemented ongoing mental-health support services for students and actively promoted positive psychological well-being through counselling, preventive education, awareness campaigns, and psychological-support programmes. These documented services and initiatives demonstrate the University's contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 3 by strengthening student access to mental-health support and promoting a healthier, more inclusive, and psychologically supportive academic environment.
