Strengthening Research: UIN Jakarta Conducts Benchmarking Visit to Universiti Malaya
Kuala Lumpur, UIN News Online — A delegation from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta conducted a benchmarking visit to Universiti Malaya (UM), Malaysia, as part of efforts to strengthen research governance and foster research internationalization.
Head of the Center for Research and Publishing (Puslitpen) LP2M UIN Jakarta, Dr. Siti Ummi Masruroh, M.Sc., explained that the visit aimed to learn best practices in research management from one of Asia's leading universities.
“This benchmarking is part of UIN Jakarta's efforts to enhance research governance, improve the quality and productivity of scientific publications, and expand international collaboration networks,” she stated.
The lecturer at the Faculty of Science and Technology, UIN Jakarta, noted that Universiti Malaya was chosen as a benchmark institution due to its strong academic and research reputation. In the QS World University Rankings 2026, UM ranked 58th globally.
“This ranking reflects Universiti Malaya's capacity in building a research ecosystem, generating high-quality scientific publications, and developing global academic networks,” she remarked.
Through this visit, the UIN Jakarta delegation aims to explore various best practices in research administration, encompassing governance and institutional support, strategies for improving scientific publication quality, researcher capacity building, and strengthening partnerships with global collaborators.
“What we want to study is not merely the end results, but also the system and ecosystem established to generate impactful, quality research and publications,” she explained.
According to Ummi, strengthening research management has become increasingly essential in line with UIN Jakarta's vision as an Islamic higher education institution oriented toward academic excellence and global contribution. Universiti Malaya's experience in fostering an advanced research ecosystem is expected to serve as valuable input for formulating research development policies and strategies at UIN Jakarta.
In addition to exchanging best practices, the visit aimed to open doors for academic and scientific partnerships. The established network is anticipated to drive joint research initiatives, co-authored publications, and international-standard academic programs between UIN Jakarta researchers and Universiti Malaya academics.
“We hope this benchmarking does not end with information exchange, but translates into concrete collaborations beneficial to research development at both institutions,” she added.
Furthermore, Ummi emphasized that this benchmarking activity is part of UIN Jakarta's strategic pathway to cultivate a research culture that is robust, productive, collaborative, and globally oriented.
By reinforcing governance and expanding institutional networks, UIN Jakarta aims to enhance its contribution to scientific advancement while consolidating its standing as a world-class Islamic university.
