Siti Napsiyah: Deradicalization Need an Integrative Approach

Depok, UIN NEWS Online- The deradicalization program needs to consider the social work integrative approach. It will be a program with its approach of social work so it implementation can be effectively suppress any cases and terrorism perpetrators. In addition, the program is now more open by involving social workers who have suitable skills and background knowledge.

This was conveyed by Siti Napsiyah Ariefuzzaman in his doctoral dissertation session, an Integrative Approach in the Development of Prisoners of Terrorism Cases: Case Study of Cipinang Prison Klas I and East-North Jakarta Prison in FISIP, Indonesia University, Depok,  on Monday (19/6/2017).

Dissertation Session presents a number of panels led by Prof. Dr. Isbandi Rukminto Adi, Prof. Dr. Jamhari Makruf (UIN Jakarta), Dr. Makmur Sunusi (Ministry of Social Affairs), Fentini Nugroho Ph.D (Kesos UI) and Dr. Ir. Eva Anjani, SH. MH (Faculty of Law UI). Acts as promoter Prof. Dr. Bambang Shergi Laksmono M.Sc  and Co-Promoter. Mohammad Kemal Dermawan, M.Si.

As a lecturer of Social Welfare Program, FIDKOM, UIN Jakarta, she explains that Social Work Integrative Approach can be understood as an approach that required cross-profession involvement, across sciences, and implemented comprehensively in micro, mezzo, or macro level. Therefore, as an approach, the deradicalization of terrorist prisoners must include prison officers, religious experts, psychologists, criminologists, and social workers in a planned and systematic way.

With a cross-profession and scientific approach, she said, it was hoped that the deradicalization program can be effective in preventing the convicted terrorist from not re-doing the action and living normally in the society. "A convicted terrorist is expected to return back to society, accepted by society and play a role in society," she explained.

Of the numerous professions involved, Napsiyah emphasized the importance of social worker involvement. With their scientific background and expertise, she explained, social workers can be the most important mediator in the deradicalization program.

"Social worker can be a case manager who is responsible for handling of a prisoner to completion," explained Napsiah, a woman who graduated from her Bachelor (BSW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) at McGill University, Montreal, Canada.

Furthermore, Napsiyah explained that the program of guiding terrorism prisoners in prisons has not been implemented based on special counseling for terrorism prisoners. As a result, instead of stopping their terrorism action, they back to re-doing the terror. Not only that, the absence of special program made the convicted terrorist  contaminated other like prison officers and other inmates to be radical or even worst after their getting out prison.

Napsiyah in her research also noted that there is typology of napiter attitude after program coaching in prisons so far. The main typology is the non-cooperative militant group, this group as its characteristic of radical political ideology, does not accept other opinions, denounce others, terrorism as jihad, non-cooperative and thinks prison is thogut.

Another typologies, the groups of militant cooperative, have a radical non-political ideology, as adherents of faith with the involvement of national networks and non ISIS. The last one is the group of participants (follower) with the characteristic on culting specific leaders and has economic motives. This group is not consider involved in terrorism acts but only as facilities support. (usa)
