Second Day of Workshop: PSGA UIN Jakarta Strengthens Technical Skills in Gender-Focused Academic Writing
Hotel ADIA Suites, UIN Online News – On the second day of its Workshop on Academic Writing for Gender and Child Issues, the Center for Gender and Child Studies of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta (PSGA) shifted its focus to strengthening participants' technical skills in academic writing. The session was designed to equip participants with practical competencies in producing scholarly works that not only adhere to academic standards but also critically and persuasively address gender and child-related issues. The workshop was held at Hotel ADIA Suites on Wednesday (15 April 2026).
The session featured Sa’diyah El-Adawiyah, a lecturer at Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta and a senior gender researcher, who shared her professional experiences while emphasizing the importance of incorporating a gender perspective into academic research. In her presentation, she stressed that gender sensitivity should serve as a guiding principle throughout every stage of the research process, from selecting a research topic to conducting data analysis.
She also highlighted that scholarly writing on gender issues requires careful use of concepts and data to avoid reinforcing bias or stereotypes that may disadvantage particular groups.
The workshop continued with a comprehensive session by Ahmad Hamdani, a lecturer and public speaker, who discussed effective techniques for academic writing. He explained the importance of developing a well-structured manuscript, beginning with topic selection, problem formulation, literature review, and continuing through data analysis and presentation.
According to him, authors addressing gender and child-related issues must not only understand the subject matter but also be able to communicate their findings effectively through rigorous and accountable academic writing.
“Academic papers must be organized systematically, supported by evidence, and built upon strong arguments. When discussing issues such as gender and sexual violence, writers need both sensitivity and analytical depth to ensure their work remains free from bias while upholding the principles of justice,” he said.
He further noted that one of the greatest challenges in academic writing is maintaining logical consistency and coherence throughout the manuscript. For this reason, participants were encouraged to develop detailed outlines before drafting their complete papers.
In addition to the lectures, the second day included a hands-on writing exercise in which participants prepared outlines for academic papers based on selected gender and child-related issues.
The workshop concluded with closing remarks from Wiwi Sajaroh, Head of PSGA UIN Jakarta, who expressed her appreciation for the participants' active engagement and the valuable contributions made by the invited speakers.
She reaffirmed that the workshop reflects PSGA's ongoing commitment to fostering scholarly work that integrates gender perspectives and responds to pressing social issues, particularly sexual violence and child protection.
“We hope participants will continue learning and writing beyond this workshop. Our university needs more academic works that meaningfully incorporate gender perspectives while promoting justice and equality,” she stated.
She further emphasized that strengthening gender literacy through academic writing represents a strategic step toward creating a more inclusive academic environment that is responsive to humanitarian and social issues.
