Research Article Review: Exploring the Role of Parenting and Religiosity in Promoting Religious Moderation Among Muslim Adolescents
Can parenting styles and religiosity play a role in shaping tolerance among Indonesian Muslim youth? This question is addressed in a recent study by Wara Alfa Syukrilla, S.Si., M.Si., and Prof. Dr. Zahrotun Nihayah, M.Si., from the Faculty of Psychology at UIN Jakarta, alongside Dr. Mohammad Fayruz, S.Pt., M.M., from Ganesha College of Economics. Their research, titled "Religious Moderation of Indonesian Muslim Adolescents," was published in the 2024 edition of Tazkiya: Journal of Psychology.
The study delves into the influence of family upbringing, particularly parenting styles, and the level of religiosity on fostering religious moderation among Indonesian Muslim adolescents. In a country as religiously and ethnically diverse as Indonesia, maintaining social harmony is a constant challenge. Historical incidents, such as the 2015 Tolikara conflict, underscore the need for promoting tolerance to prevent radicalism and sustain peace.
Defining Religious Moderation
Religious moderation in Islam advocates for a balanced, peaceful, and compassionate approach to faith and practice, rejecting extremism and radicalism. This concept is vital in promoting coexistence and mitigating conflict within Indonesia’s pluralistic society.
Religiosity as a Cornerstone
The research underscores the critical role of religiosity in encouraging religious moderation. Religiosity—expressed through acts of worship, charitable deeds, and ethical behavior—serves as a foundational element in developing moderate attitudes toward religion. The study explores how these values, when nurtured in the family environment, can shape adolescents' perspectives on faith and tolerance.
The Impact of Parenting Styles
Parenting plays a pivotal role in the moral and character development of adolescents. The study finds that authoritative parenting—marked by warmth, responsiveness, and firm expectations—fosters a strong moral identity and respect for traditions. This style emphasizes adherence to cultural norms and social responsibility, making it effective in instilling values of moderation.
In contrast, permissive parenting, characterized by high warmth but low control, is less effective in developing moral and religious moderation.
Educational Implications
The findings highlight the interconnectedness of parenting and religiosity in cultivating tolerance and balance in religious attitudes among Muslim youth. The authors advocate for educational programs and community initiatives rooted in Islamic teachings to promote religious moderation and prevent radicalism.
By aligning with Islamic principles, the study offers practical insights for addressing social issues and fostering a harmonious society.
