Rector of UIN Jakarta Emphasizes That Physicians Should Prioritize Lives Over Financial Gain
Faculty of Medicine, UIN News Online - Thirteen students from the Doctor Profession Program at UIN Jakarta participated in the hippocratic oath ceremony, attended by the Rector of UIN Jakarta, Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, on Monday, July 22, 2024.
In his speech, he congratulated the oath-taking participants who had completed their studies and appreciated the struggles of the participants' parents who worked hard to finance their children's education at the Faculty of Medicine.
"I understand that you all have gone through tough times, stress, and burnout. Likewise, the parents who saw their bank accounts depleting with each tuition payment. But that is a form of struggle and dedication from the parents," he said.
According to him, parents should not pressure their children to become physicians solely for the salary, because the purpose of becoming a doctor is to help save lives.
"Becoming a physician for the sake of financial gain is a mistake. A physician’s duty is to help people, as they are on the front lines when a life needs saving, regardless of the payment," he said.
He stated that in Islam, one of the obligatory things to protect is life. Therefore, the role of physicians is crucial in saving human lives because if someone can save one life, it is as if they have saved all of humanity.
Asep also advised the oath-taking participants to maintain good relations with UIN Jakarta and to set a good example for the medical students who are still studying at UIN Jakarta.
"I hope you will stay connected with UIN and can mentor the juniors who are still in the Faculty of Medicine. May you all stay healthy and be blessed," he concluded.
