QS WUR 2025, UIN Jakarta Holds the Title of Superiority in the Field of Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies

Rectorate Building, UIN News - UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta has once again achieved significant achievement as the best Indonesian university ranked by the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS WUR) 2025 in the field of Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies.

UIN Jakarta successfully maintained its worldwide standing during the release of this rating on Wednesday (12/3/2025). This list includes just three Indonesian universities: Gadjah Mada University (ranked 51-100 globally), Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta (ranked 101-150 globally), and the University of Indonesia (ranked 101-150 globally).

In the Rectorate Building on Wednesday (19/3/2025), Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, M.A., Ph.D., expressed profound thanks over this news. He asserted that this accomplishment demonstrates UIN Jakarta's worldwide recognition as an exemplary institution in Islamic and transdisciplinary studies.

"UIN Jakarta has effectively positioned itself as a premier institution in theology, divinity, and interdisciplinary religious studies. This accomplishment is intrinsically linked to the hard work of the academic community of UIN Jakarta," the rector of UIN Jakarta stated.

He underscored that this accomplishment transcends mere statistics, serving as evidence that Islamic studies have substantial value in global discourse, particularly in comprehending the social, political, and cultural dynamics across many regions of the globe.

"Among the 18 Indonesian universities included in the QS WUR by Subject 2025 list, UIN Jakarta consistently excels in Islamic studies. This achievement further establishes UIN Jakarta as a premier institution in theology, divinity, and interdisciplinary religious studies." he proudly conveyed.

Moreover, Professor Asep is certain that UIN Jakarta's position would progressively improve in the following years. UIN Jakarta is now anticipating the comprehensive results of the QS World University Rankings, set to be revealed in June 2025, along with the QS Asia Ranking in October 2025.

"We had diligently engaged in data collecting and document submission for this rating; then the rest of our hard work will be paid off. We are currently awaiting the results, and I am confident that UIN Jakarta will excel even further on the global stage," he addressed.

Potential fields in the QS WUR by Subject rankings

Prof. Tholabi, the Vice Rector for Student Affairs, mentioned that the key aspect contributing to UIN Jakarta's global position is the substantial volume of scholarly citations. Academic citations of UIN Jakarta reached a score of 92, which is notably high in comparison to other institutions. 

"This substantial growth indicates that publications from UIN Jakarta are extensively cited by international scholars, demonstrating the substantial impact of our research," the head of the UIN Jakarta Taskforce Team assured.

Furthermore, according to the study conducted by his team, this institution has significant potential to be included in the QS WUR by Subject rankings across three disciplines: education, sociology, and communication. 

"As for now, the volume of publications, academic standing, and citations in those disciplines are constantly rising. This growth indicates a strong likelihood that UIN Jakarta will be included in the QS WUR by Subject ranking for those categories in the future," he reported.

He added that the emphasis on transdisciplinary research and worldwide cooperation enhances UIN Jakarta's standing internationally. Thus, with the enhancement of academic strategies, UIN Jakarta is confident that it will excel in social sciences and education.

Scoring equals striving.

Prof. Maila Dinia Husni Rahiem, Ph.D., head of the Internationalization UIN Jakarta Taskforce Team, elucidated that the QS WUR by Subject 2025 rating employs four primary components for its evaluation.

  1. Academic Reputation (70%): It assesses the esteem in which academics regard the university's intellectual excellence.
  2. Employer Reputation (10%): It determines the degree to which university graduates are competitive in the labor market.
  3. Citations(10%): It counts the volume and quality of citations from scholarly publications.
  4. H-index (10%): It measures the production and scientific impact of scholarly publications.

"As of now, 161 international institutions are listed in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025. The leading 10 institutions in this area include the University of Notre Dame, Harvard University, the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, Duke University, and Yale University," Professor Maila mentioned.

Notably, UIN Jakarta is placed in the same position comparable to that of prestigious global institutions like Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, The University of Queensland, and Universitat Leipzig.

Multidisciplinary studies at UIN Jakarta

Contrary to popular belief, the study of Theology, Divinity, and Religious Studies at UIN Jakarta is not just derived from religious faculties; it is also generated by many academic programs that include religious viewpoints into its research.

UIN Jakarta's scholarly publication examine a multitude of research: Islamic culture and civilization, Islamic science, and the Islamic perspective. Additionally, Islamic studies at UIN Jakarta also amalgamate with modern sciences, inclusive social domain, and technological advancement.
