Rectorate Building, UIN Online News—UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta has achieved global recognition by ranking 101-140 internationally in the QS World University Ranking 2024 in the Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies cluster. This achievement places UIN Jakarta as the only State Islamic Religious Higher Education Institution (PTKIN) included in the QS World University Ranking 2024.
Data released by the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024: Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies, accessed by UIN Online News on Monday (15/4/2024), stated that the ranking of 101-140 in the related subject is based on four assessment indicators. These indicators are academic reputation (52.9), citations per paper (89.3), employer reputation (48), and H-index citations (74.7).
With such a ranking, UIN Jakarta now stands on par with many world-class universities from various regions such as the University of Freiburg in Germany, Cornell University, Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main, Seoul National University, and the University of Leipzig. It is noted that these universities have a long-standing academic tradition since their establishment.
For example, the University of Freiburg in Germany is one of the top 10 universities in Germany since its foundation in 1457. Similarly, Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main, established since 1914, was developed with the ideals of European enlightenment and resistance to racism. Cornell University also developed its academic tradition since its founding in 1865 in Ithaca, New York, USA.
From within the country, only Universitas Gadjah Mada and Universitas Indonesia accompany UIN Jakarta in the ranking, with each holding positions 61 and 130 worldwide, respectively. Meanwhile, UIN Jakarta occupies position 122, being the only State Islamic Religious Higher Education Institution (PTKIN) included in the ranking.
As for the top five rankings in the QS World University Rankings 2024 for the subject of Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies, they are held successively by Harvard University, University of Oxford, University of Notre Dame, University of Cambridge, and Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen. Following them are KU Leuven, Durham University, University of Chicago, Duke University, and The University of Edinburgh.
In light of this achievement, the leadership and academic community of UIN Jakarta express gratitude and high appreciation for the hard work of all elements, ensuring that various aspects that are indicators of ranking are fulfilled. "Alhamdulillah, we express our gratitude during this Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 1445 Hijriah, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta is included in the QS World University Rankings 2024 for the subject of Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies," appreciated the Rector, Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar M.A., Ph.D.
The same appreciation was conveyed by Rector Asep Jahar to the leadership of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, enabling UIN Jakarta to represent the group of PTKIN in the ranking. "This achievement is also inseparable from the support of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, enabling UIN Jakarta to represent the group of Islamic religious higher education institutions in the ranking," he further appreciated.
Chair of the World Class University Task Force at UIN Jakarta, Prof. Maila Dinia Husni Rahiem M.A. Ph.D, revealed that the QS World Ranking for the related subject is the first time UIN Jakarta has participated. "This also positions UIN Jakarta as the only PTKIN included in the QS Ranking ranking system," she said.
Furthermore, Professor Maila stated that the achievement of QS WUR for this subject is the result of the performance of all faculties with related fields of study such as the Faculty of Ushuluddin, Faculty of Islamic Studies, Faculty of Sharia and Law, and others. This is because more than half of the university's scholarly publications come from the social and humanities group with focuses such as Islamic theology, religious studies, and others.
"In the future, it is hoped that UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta will continue to be a world-class university in various other fields of study, such as computer science, education, science, psychology, politics, health, medicine, and others," she concluded.
It is noted that the ranking achievement aligns with UIN Jakarta's internationalization program. For this task, the Rector of UIN Jakarta, Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, formed the World Class University (WCU) task force under the coordination of Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Tholabi Kharlie M.A. M.H.
One of the main tasks of this team is to promote the improvement of the quality and performance of UIN Jakarta's academic institutions to be on par with world-class campuses. This includes pushing UIN Jakarta to occupy the 127th position in the QS Southeast Asia Ranking and the 751-800 QS Asia Ranking.
To achieve this target, the leadership and community of UIN Jakarta are committed to expanding international collaboration in research and teaching, including promoting academic mobility. This includes hosting inbound and outbound guest lecturer programs, including students studying at campuses abroad and vice versa. At the same time, UIN Jakarta continues to increase international publications and participation in global academic forums. (Maila D./ZM/FM/Faadhila Idris)
