Public Lecture: The Role of the Indonesian Embassy in Lisbon in Strengthening Indonesia-Portugal Diplomatic Relations

Diorama Room, UIN News Online - UIN Jakarta held a public lecture by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to Portugal. This event is entitled "The Performance of the Indonesian Embassy in Lisbon, Indonesia-Portugal Cooperation, and Strengthening the Protection of PMI-Diaspora." The purpose of this event was to discuss the performance of the Indonesian embassy in Lisbon towards Indonesia-Portugal cooperation. The event was held in the diorama room of Harun Nasution Building UIN Jakarta on Tuesday (13/8/2024).

The public lecture was attended by the Indonesian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Portugal, H.E. Rudy Alfonso, SH. MH, Rector of UIN Jakarta, Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, M.A., Ph.D., as well as representatives of students and academic community of UIN Jakarta. This event is part of UIN Jakarta's internationalization efforts in establishing cooperation with various universities in Portugal.

UIN Jakarta Rector Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, M.A., Ph.D., in his speech explained one of the important points of the country's success is how we can position Indonesia in the eyes of the world. "Therefore, the embassy plays an important role in positioning Indonesia, related to politics, social, culture, economy, religion, how to organize interactions, diplomacy and also place Indonesia well in the eyes of the world," he explained.

In addition, the Indonesian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary (LBBP) to Portugal, H.E. Rudy Alfonso, SH. MH, he explained the history of Indonesia-Portugal bilateral relations which had experienced ups and downs. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were first opened in 1950, but were interrupted in 1965 and 1975 due to the East Timor issue. Then in 2000 Indonesia-Portugal re-established diplomatic relations during the 3rd President of the Republic of Indonesia, B. J. Habibie.

"Indonesia-Portugal relations have a long history, especially in the field of language. There are around 500 words in Indonesian that originated from Portuguese," Rudi explained.

Rudi said that one of the important tasks of the Indonesian Embassy in Lisbon is to maintain the territorial integrity of the Republic of Indonesia. In addition, the Embassy also plays an active role in various activities, such as international conferences related to environmental issues, visits by Indonesian Parliament officials, and Indonesia's leadership in the ASEAN Committee in Lisbon (ACPL).

Indonesia and Portugal continue to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various sectors, including politics, economy, socio-culture, and education. In an effort to strengthen diplomatic relations, the Indonesian Embassy in Lisbon continues to introduce Indonesian culinary through conferences and promotion of the Indonesian trade expo and Europe business forum.

"The Embassy also visits potential Portuguese companies, including vision box, vista alegre, flinstone and gel peixe," Rudi concluded.
