PTKIN Rector’s Forum holds discussion on Religious Moderation

Diorama room, UIN News Online – The State Islamic Higher Education Institution (PTKIN) Rector’s forum making the issue of religious moderation in PTKIN as the theme of the meeting held on Monday (2/18/2019) at the Diorama Room, campus I of UIN Jakarta. The event, which was officially opened by the Rector of UIN Jakarta Amany Lubis also invited the Director of Islamic Higher Education Institution Arskal Salim, and BNPB’s Director of Disaster Preparedness Medi Herlianto.

Amany in her opening remarks said, as one of the institutions under the auspices of Ministry of Religious Affairs, PTKIN must be able to implement religious moderation. "Therefore, the theme of this FGD is the implementation of religious moderation in PTKIN," said Amany.

Amany also defines religious moderation as a balance between religious practices and attitudes, and humanitarian actions. In addition to obeying the religious teachings that are believed, moderation could be understood as someone's concern for the country by maintaining its peace and unity.

Amany also added that religious moderation can be understood as a concern for others, such as concern for disaster. Such attitudes are very relevant to Indonesia's social conditions living in disaster-prone areas.  “Hence, we can associate religious moderation with disaster issues," she said.

On the same occasion, Arskal said that the importance of religious moderation applied in the PTKIN was based on inter-religious intolerance, radicalism, even against the legitimate government. Based on research conducted by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, he continued, the faculties at PTKIN were not immune from such exposure.

Meanwhile, Medi said, PTKIN was supposed to translate religious moderation with concern to mitigate disasters. Indonesia which is geographically located in the volcano lane requires the PTKIN community to think about the up and downstream of the disaster.

“Therefore, we ask the PTKIN academic community to be involved in this disaster mitigation activity, both in terms of education, research and community outreach,” said Medi. (usa)
