Promoting Community Health and Well-Being through Shared Sports Facilities

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta demonstrates its commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles, physical activity, and community well-being by providing sports infrastructure and facilitating the use of selected campus facilities by members of the wider community. Through university-managed sports areas, faculty facilities, organised physical-activity programmes, and arrangements for external facility use, the University extends the benefits of its infrastructure beyond academic and student activities.

During 2024–2025, the University's sports facilities and shared campus spaces supported recreational activities, physical fitness, community participation, and public health promotion. These initiatives contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being by encouraging physical activity, supporting healthier lifestyles, and increasing opportunities for community members to participate in sports and exercise.

1. Providing Sports Infrastructure to Support Physical Activity and Well-Being

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta maintains a range of sports and recreational facilities designed to promote physical fitness and active lifestyles. The University's published facility information identifies several sports resources, including a football field, jogging track, multifunctional sports courts, Syahida Gym, and a climbing area.

The multifunctional courts support activities such as futsal, volleyball, tennis, badminton, basketball, and martial arts. These facilities provide opportunities for physical exercise, recreational sports, organised sporting activities, and community interaction. The provision of sports infrastructure forms an important component of the University's approach to student welfare and campus health. Beyond supporting physical fitness, sports and exercise activities encourage positive social interaction, strengthen teamwork, and contribute to psychological well-being.

2. Sharing Selected Sports Facilities with External Users

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta also accommodates the use of selected sports facilities by individuals and organisations outside its immediate academic community. University facility-management arrangements allow certain sports areas to be accessed by external users through established rental and scheduling procedures. At the Faculty of Medicine, internal facility-management documentation identifies arrangements under which external parties may use selected sports facilities through rental mechanisms.

These arrangements establish a means of sharing university infrastructure while maintaining appropriate oversight of scheduling, facility availability, maintenance, and responsible use. This approach demonstrates that access to selected University sports facilities is not necessarily restricted to enrolled students and University employees. By making designated facilities available through managed access arrangements, the University supports broader community participation in physical activity while ensuring that its facilities remain appropriately maintained.

3. Providing Free Public Access to Campus Spaces for Physical Activity

In addition to managed facility use, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta implemented a documented public-access initiative in April 2025. On 30 April 2025, the Faculty of Psychology published an account of its programme providing free access to selected faculty facilities and resources for the general public. The programme included the use of campus space for Run for Mental Health, a physical-activity initiative held within the Faculty's premises.

The Faculty's parking area was used as a venue for the exercise programme, which was explicitly described as being open to anyone. The activity encouraged members of the wider community to participate in physical exercise while raising awareness of mental health. Importantly, the Faculty confirmed that the public-access activities were provided without charging participants or visitors. This programme provides direct evidence that University-managed outdoor space was made available to members of the public for a health-related physical-activity initiative. By combining exercise with mental-health awareness, the University demonstrated how its facilities can serve a broader social purpose beyond routine academic activities.

4. Expanding the Community Benefits of University Facilities

The University's approach to shared facilities recognises that sports and recreational infrastructure can benefit both the academic community and people living in surrounding areas. The Faculty of Psychology's 2025 public-access programme illustrates this principle by transforming campus space into a venue for community physical activity.

The programme also demonstrates the potential for University facilities to support activities that connect physical fitness with mental and emotional well-being. Such initiatives contribute to the development of inclusive spaces where University resources are used to encourage healthier habits and community participation. Alongside these public-access initiatives, the University's provision of sports fields, courts, jogging facilities, and other exercise areas establishes the infrastructure necessary to support organised recreation and physical activity.

5. Managing Community Access through Institutional Arrangements

Effective sharing of sports facilities requires arrangements that balance educational activities with public access. At Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta, selected facilities can be managed through scheduling and, where applicable, rental procedures.

These arrangements support responsible use of sports infrastructure and help prevent scheduling conflicts between University activities and external users. They also provide a framework for maintenance and operational oversight, ensuring that shared spaces remain suitable for their intended activities. The University's documented practices therefore demonstrate two complementary approaches: managed access to selected facilities for external users and free public participation in particular University-hosted physical-activity programmes.4Seniora4

6. Supporting Physical and Mental Health through Shared Sports Resources

Access to safe and suitable spaces for exercise can support several important dimensions of community health. Regular physical activity contributes to cardiovascular fitness, physical strength, mobility, stress management, and overall psychological well-being.

Shared sports facilities can also encourage social interaction, community participation, and positive relationships between the University and surrounding communities. The University's 2025 Run for Mental Health initiative demonstrated this connection by using a campus facility to support public physical activity and mental-health awareness. Through the provision of sports infrastructure and opportunities for external participation, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta contributes to a healthier campus environment and supports broader community well-being.

7. Institutional Contribution to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta has established sports and recreational infrastructure and documented arrangements through which selected University facilities can be shared beyond the academic community. The University's approach includes managed use of sports areas by external users and free public participation in physical-activity programmes.

The 2025 Faculty of Psychology public-access initiative, particularly Run for Mental Health, demonstrates the use of University-managed outdoor space for an exercise activity open to the general public without participation charges. Meanwhile, the University's sports infrastructure and faculty-level facility-management arrangements support the broader principle of sharing designated facilities with external users. Through these initiatives, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta demonstrates that selected campus sports and physical-activity facilities are made available beyond the University community, contributing to public participation in exercise, health promotion, and community well-being. This approach reflects the University's commitment to expanding the social benefits of its infrastructure and supporting Sustainable Development Goal 3 through accessible physical-activity opportunities.
