Prof. Darsita Highlights Indonesian Language Errors by Foreign Students

Ciputat, UIN Online News - The increasing number of international students choosing Indonesia as a study destination underscores the importance of effective Indonesian language learning. The Language Development Center (PPB) at UIN Jakarta plays a crucial role in helping foreign students master the Indonesian language to support their academic and social adaptation. However, errors in the use of Indonesian sentences persist, hindering communication and academic achievement.

Research by Prof. Darsita S, M.Hum., detailed in the scientific article ‘Use of Indonesian Sentences by Foreign Language Students,’ published in the Al-Turas Bulletin Sinta 2 Volume 20 No. 2 Year 2014, highlights frequent language errors made by foreign students at PPB UIN Jakarta. These errors are categorized into several aspects.

Theoretically, foreign speakers face various challenges when learning Indonesian, including vague understanding of Indonesian sentence structure, vocabulary acquisition and its formation, differences between Indonesian sentence patterns and their native languages, and more.

Errors identified in the research span spelling, word formation especially in affixation, sentence order which can alter meanings, and understanding the context of word usage. These errors are significant in the realms of syntax, morphology, and semantics.

Syntactic errors are evident in sentences like "Dan matahari tidak menyinari di malam hari," where the subject should not be preceded by a preposition in Indonesian sentence structure. Morphological errors are found in sentences like "Ahmad pepanggil temannya," where the correct form is ‘memanggil,’ not ‘pepanggil.’ The prefix pe- is only used to form nouns, not verbs. Semantic errors appear in sentences such as “... hujan tidak menyinari bumi...,” where the correct verb is ‘menyirami’ (to water), not ‘menyinari’ (to shine on).

This research provides valuable insights for teaching Indonesian at PPB UIN Jakarta. The findings highlight the need for more effective teaching methods to address common sentence usage errors. Understanding the challenges faced by foreign students allows educators to improve learning strategies.
