Philanthropy Practices with Social Justice Value Need to be Supported

STF, UIN News Online - Research Division of Humanitarian Institution of Humanity STF UIN Jakarta recommends strengthening social justice philanthropic practice in order to maximize efforts to improve people's welfare. In recent decades, the practice of social philanthropy has shown a trend in the society.

It was the result of the 'Phenomenon of Philanthropic Community Practices in the Framework of Social Justice in Indonesia'  research which was held by STF UIN Jakarta "One of them, the formulation of government regulation in favor of Islamic philanthropy practices can move toward social justice philanthropy," said Director of STF UIN Jakarta, Dr. Ir. Amelia Fauzia.

The formulation of government regulations, she added, is needed as a legal framework as well as guidance that encourages institutional arrangements and the development of philanthropic practices of social justice. The availability of legal framework as well as guidance allow the philanthropy activities to run as expected in accelerating the welfare of the community.

The research of STF UIN Jakarta itself, said Ameila, found that in the last two decades philanthropic practice of social justice in the country continues to improve. This can be seen from a number of indicators such as the increase in the number of organizations both community-based and government.

In addition, the amount of donations spent in the form of charity, zakat, and endowments, and the distribution of aid to target communities outside Indonesia shows the strengthening of the practice of philanthropy. In the real phenomenon of the society makes the practice of philanthropy provides a space for the development of philanthropic forms of social justice.

According to Amelia, social justice philanthropy is a more advanced form of philanthropy than the limited practice of generosity in short-term service delivery.

There are four criteria that make the practice of philanthropy called philanthropy with social justice. It includes, targets eliminate poverty, have long-term programs, use non-discriminatory humanitarian approaches, and have transparent, accountable and responsive management. (usa)
