Pharmacy Department UIN Jakarta Explores Advances in Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics with Visiting Professor from the Philippines

Jakarta, UIN Online News — The Pharmacy Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FIKES) at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta held an International Guest Lecture titled “Introduction to Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics” featuring Prof. Gerard Lee L. See, Ph.D., from the School of Health Care Professions, University of San Carlos, Philippines, on Monday (10/11/2025).

The event is part of the faculty’s international collaboration initiative under the Adjunct Professor program, aimed at strengthening academic partnerships and enhancing understanding of emerging scientific developments in the field.

During the session, Prof. Gerard Lee, a renowned expert in drug development, drug delivery systems, pharmacokinetics, and nanotechnology, emphasized the crucial role of in-depth knowledge of biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics for future pharmacists.

“Pharmacokinetics,” he explained, “studies what the body does to a drug through processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination. Meanwhile, pharmacodynamics focuses on what the drug does to the body.”

He further noted that a comprehensive understanding of both fields is essential for rational drug development and use.

“Understanding pharmacokinetics allows us to see how drugs move within the body, while biopharmaceutics enables us to design better drug formulations that ensure safety and efficacy. These two aspects are inseparable in modern pharmaceutical science,” said Prof. Gerard.

Then, he highlighted the importance of maintaining therapeutic drug doses within the therapeutic window just above the Minimum Effective Concentration (MEC) to ensure effectiveness but below the Minimum Toxic Concentration (MTC) to avoid adverse effects.

"The role of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) is critically supported by pharmacokinetic modeling and appropriate route selection, such as parenteral administration, to bypass first-pass metabolism in the liver," he added.

The discussion session, moderated by apt. Ofa Suzanti Betha, M.Si., continued the Q&A session with both lecturers and pharmacy students from the 3rd, 5th, and 7th semesters actively engaged by exchanging insights throughout the session.

In the end, the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. apt. Zilhadia, M.Si., expressed her appreciation for the successful organization of the international academic lecture in broadening students’ perspectives and reinforcing UIN Jakarta’s global academic standing.
