Official Statement from the Ministry of Religious Affairs: Eid al-Fitr 1446H will occur on April 31, 2025
Jakarta, UIN Online News - The Indonesian government, via the Ministry of Religious Affairs, declared that 1 Shawwal 1446 Hijri is the end of Ramadan, which will occur on Monday (31/32025). This ruling allows for the simultaneous commencement of Eid al-Fitr in every Indonesian Muslim community.
Prof. Dr. K.H. Nasaruddin Umar M.A. made this announcement during a press conference regarding the Eid al-Fitr holiday, following a session at the HM Rasjidi Auditorium, Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Jakarta, on Saturday (29/32025).
"Thereby, it is determined that the first of Syawal 1446 H occurs on Monday, March 31, 2025 AD," he stated at a news conference.
The determination of Eid al-Fitr for 2025 AD or 1446 H is based on the lunar position in Indonesia. Despite the involvement of Indonesia in the Minister of Religious Affairs of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore (MABIMS), this statement does not conform with the joint criterion that determines the hilal visibility parameters with a height of 3 degrees and an elongation angle of 6.4 degrees.
"The moon sighting reports from around Indonesia verified that the crescent moon remains below the horizon, with altitudes varying from minus 3 degrees 15 minutes 47 seconds to minus 1 degree 4 minutes 57 seconds. The elongation angle varied from 1 degree 12 minutes 89 seconds to 1 degree 36 minutes 38 seconds," he clarified.
Furthermore, Cecep Nurwendaya from the Kemenag Falak Team elucidated that on March 29, 2025, the altitude of the crescent moon in Indonesia varied from -3.26 in Jayapura to -1.08 in Banda Aceh. Likewise, regarding the elongation angle, all areas of Indonesia significantly deviate from the MABIMS requirements, measuring 1.61 degrees in the extreme east and 1.21 degrees in the extreme west.
Meanwhile, this result shows no contradiction among Indonesian Islamic community groups, including Muhammadiyah, which employs the calculating method (hisab), and Nahdlatul Ulama, which utilizes the observation method (rukyat).
The Minister of Religious Affairs conveyed appreciation for the simultaneous observance of Eid this year. He expected that the collaborative decision-making of Eid al-Fitr will facilitate the maintenance of tolerance among Muslims.
"This year, it is a blessing for all Indonesians that we came to the same conclusion regarding Eid al-Fitr. Today's decision will sustain tolerance in both religious practices and social interactions within the same nation. Therefore, let us celebrate this day with immense joy," he addressed.
