Minister of Religious Affairs Backs UIN Jakarta's Historic Medical Residency Program

Jakarta, UIN Online News – The Minister of Religious Affairs, Prof. Dr. KH. Nasaruddin Umar, has pledged his full support for the development of medical residency programs at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. The endorsement was delivered during an official audience with the Dean of UIN Jakarta’s Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Achmad Zaki, held at the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

The meeting focused on the development of the Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob-Gyn) residency program. This milestone establishes UIN Jakarta’s Faculty of Medicine as the first State Islamic Higher Education Institution (PTKIN) in Indonesia to offer a specialized medical residency program.

Minister Nasaruddin Umar expressed his commitment to personally overseeing the program's advancement, including planning a site visit to the training facilities as a sign of the government's dedication to strengthening specialized medical education within Islamic public universities.

"This initiative is part of our strategic effort to elevate the role of Islamic public universities in applied sciences, particularly in specialized medical training. I am ready to facilitate this process and coordinate directly with the Minister of Health," the Minister stated.

The official decree authorizing UIN Jakarta's Ob-Gyn residency program was issued in November 2025, building on the university's prior success in launching a Pulmonology residency program. The development of this medical track began in 2022 and has earned official recognition and partnership from the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Indonesia (FKUI), the nation's premier medical school.

The Dean of UIN Jakarta's Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Achmad Zaki, noted that public interest in the program is already remarkably high. "For the inaugural cohort of the Ob-Gyn residency program, eight candidates have officially registered. This program utilizes Fatmawati General Hospital, a major referral hospital under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health, as its primary teaching facility," he explained.

Since its inception in 2005, the Faculty of Medicine at UIN Jakarta has graduated approximately 1,200 medical doctors. The introduction of these advanced residency tracks is expected to provide a seamless academic pathway for alumni to pursue specialized degrees within the Islamic university ecosystem, while simultaneously boosting UIN Jakarta’s contribution to national healthcare services.
