Mining Engineering Student Seminar of FST UIN Jakarta Highlights the Prospects of Sustainable Mining in Indonesia

Harun Nasution Auditorium, UIN News Online – Mining Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Science and Technology, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held a National Seminar themed Sustainable Mining Prospects in Indonesia, Thursday (24/10/2024). The event was attended by national mining experts, students, and stakeholders, and featured several expert speakers who discussed various important aspects related to the sustainability of the mining industry. The seminar took place at the Harun Nasution Auditorium and received high enthusiasm from the participants.

The event chairperson, Najwa Salsabiila, explained that the seminar also highlighted the Papua region. According to her, the Papua theme was raised because currently there are no students from Papua in the Mining Engineering Study Program. “Hopefully, this seminar can open up new opportunities for young Papuan talents in the mining sector, while supporting diversity,” said Najwa.

Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Alumni, Prof. Ali Munhanif, M.A., Ph.D., in his speech emphasized the importance of this seminar in advancing mining research and development in line with the principles of environmental sustainability. “This seminar is important to promote mining research that considers aspects of environmental sustainability. In the future, the mining industry must be able to adapt to global demands towards sustainability,” said Prof. Ali.

Also present were the Head of the Mining Engineering Study Program, Andrew Fiade, M. Kom., and the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Husni Teja Sukmana, ST., M.Sc., Ph.D. Both also supported the organization of this seminar as an important step to broaden students' insights about the mining industry in the era of green transformation.

The seminar itself presented three key materials that focused on mining sustainability. The first topic was Coal Mining Company Strategy Towards Net Zero Emission in 2060, delivered by Ir. Priyadi Sutarso, President Director of PT Adaro Indonesia. In his presentation, Priyadi emphasized that PT Adaro is committed to achieving net zero emission targets by developing renewable energy technologies and optimizing operational efficiency. “We believe that coal mining can contribute to a cleaner energy transition through innovation,” he said.

The second presentation on Mine Financing Strategy for Mining was presented by Rizal Kasli, ST, IPU, ASEAN Eng. Rizal explained the challenges in funding the mining industry in the midst of digital transformation, as well as innovative funding solutions that can support the growth and sustainability of this industry. “Mining financing in the digital era requires a flexible and adaptive approach in order to maintain global competitiveness,” said Rizal.

The third presentation, Application of Modern Technology in Management to Improve Efficiency and Effectiveness of the Downstream Process, was delivered by Ir. Wisnu Salman, ST, IPM, ASEAN Eng, C.EIA. Wisnu explained how modern technologies such as automation, digitalization, and artificial intelligence can be used to increase production efficiency, reduce operational costs, and minimize negative impacts on the environment. “By utilizing this technology, we can accelerate downstreaming, which in turn supports added value for the national mining industry,” Wisnu explained.

Economic Prospects of Mining in Indonesia

In research from UIN News Online, Indonesia is one of the largest natural resource producing countries in the world, especially in the mining sector. Mining commodities such as coal, nickel, copper and gold are the mainstay of the country's exports, contributing significantly to its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, amid growing demands for sustainability and pressure to reduce carbon emissions, the sector faces major challenges.

Indonesian government policies that encourage downstream mining and clean energy transition are increasingly pressuring mining companies to innovate. The government's grand plan to achieve Net Zero Emission by 2060 provides a framework for mining companies to start implementing sustainability measures. The industry is also expected to adapt to new environmentally friendly technologies and develop funding solutions that support sustainability.

With the potential of abundant natural resources, as well as a focus on technology development and the right policies, Indonesia has great prospects to become a major player in the sustainable mining industry at the global level.

This seminar is expected to strengthen the understanding of participants, especially students, regarding the challenges and opportunities of the mining industry in Indonesia in the future. With a sustainable approach, this seminar serves as the first step to building a more environmentally friendly, competitive and globally competitive mining sector.
