Maintain and Extend Current Ecosystems' Biodiversity : Work Directly to Maintain and Extend Existing Ecosystems and Their Biodiversity, of Both Plants and Animals, Especially Ecosystems Under Threat
The program to maintain and extend existing ecosystems and biodiversity at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University was implemented from 2024 to 2026 across Campuses 1–4 in response to environmental degradation caused by urban development and human activities. Its primary objectives are to protect rare and endangered species, expand green spaces, and preserve plant and animal habitats. Key initiatives include maintaining vertical gardens, developing three new parks and one Green Campus Park, expanding the Ferns Garden, conserving rare plant species, maintaining fish ponds and goose farming, and providing habitats for birds, rabbits, and cats. At Campus 4, natural forests and planted vegetation are preserved alongside Cikuya Agriland.
The program has contributed to biodiversity conservation, with fern species increasing from 10 to 16 and subsequently 175, while conserved banana varieties increased from 22 to 24. These efforts support the protection of endangered species, provide habitats for urban wildlife, strengthen ecological balance, and raise environmental awareness among students and staff. Despite limited land at Campuses 1 and 2, the university has addressed this challenge through vertical gardens and park revitalization. Future plans include rearranging the Ferns Garden in 2026 and ensuring the continued maintenance of all conservation programs in 2027.

Vertical gardens across several major buildings, three newly developed parks, and one additional Green Campus Park. The Ferns Garden at FITK recorded an increase in identified fern species from 10 in 2024 to 16 in 2025 and 175 in 2026. The university also maintains a Plant Conservation Collection dedicated to endangered species.

On August 14, 2025, the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta conducted a fruit-harvesting activity in the garden behind the FEB Building at Ibnu Sina Campus. Led by Head of the FEB Administrative Office Imam Thobroni and staff members, the activity yielded guavas and Raja Sereh bananas grown on limited land near the motorcycle parking area. The garden also features rambutan, water guava, avocado, grapes, and other fruit trees planted two to three years earlier as part of the university’s Green Campus initiative.
FEB continues to support environmental sustainability through tree planting, the development of biopores and infiltration wells, and the creation of gardens and gazebos. These initiatives promote biodiversity, improve water absorption, and contribute to a greener, more sustainable campus environment.
