KPU Chairman Calls for Democratic Vigilance at UIN Jakarta's 133rd Graduation Ceremony

Ciputat, UIN News Online — The 133rd graduation ceremony at UIN Jakarta became more than just a celebration for its graduates as the Chairman of the Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU), Mochammad Afifuddin, S.Th.I., M.Si., delivered a poignant address on the state of democracy in Indonesia. Speaking as a distinguished alumnus on Saturday, (08/24/2024), Afifuddin took the opportunity to discuss the pressing issues surrounding Indonesia’s democratic landscape.

In his speech, Afifuddin reflected on the recent decision by the Constitutional Court (MK) to amend the threshold for regional head candidacy, following a case brought by the Labor and Gelora Parties. This ruling, encapsulated in Decision Number 60/PUU-XXII/2024, aims to create a more inclusive political environment. Afifuddin assured that the KPU would adhere to the ruling, despite ongoing debates among politicians and the public regarding its implications.

Afifuddin also voiced his concerns about the challenges facing democracy in Indonesia today. He urged the new graduates to not only observe but actively contribute to the strengthening of the nation’s democratic processes. “As graduates, you are entrusted with the responsibility to shape this nation. Democracy transcends the act of voting; it involves upholding justice and equality for every citizen,” said the alumnus from the Hadith Interpretation Study Program at the Faculty of Ushuluddin, UIN Jakarta.

While the MK's decision is anticipated to broaden the scope for political participation, particularly for candidates from diverse backgrounds, Afifuddin stressed that safeguarding democracy is a collective responsibility that extends beyond the KPU and the government to every member of society.

The ceremony underscored the broader role of education in preparing graduates not just for academic success, but also for the societal responsibilities that lie ahead. Afifuddin concluded his remarks by challenging the graduates to be proactive participants in Indonesia’s democratic evolution, encouraging them to be agents of change rather than passive observers.
