Javanese Puppetry and Quranic Mastery: Ministry Launches Cultural Syncretic Visuals for 2026 National Events

SEMARANG, UIN Online News – The Minister of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. KH. Nasaruddin Umar, officially launched the statutory logo and branding assets for the 31st National Quranic Recitation Competition (MTQ Nasional XXXI). Scheduled to take place in Semarang, Central Java, the grand annual corporate identity was unveiled by the Minister alongside the Governor of Central Java, Ahmad Luthfi, in Semarang.

The official 2026 National MTQ logo adopts the traditional silhouette of a Javanese shadow puppetry mountain (Gunungan Wayang) rendered in a white-and-green color palette, embedded with iconic architectural landmarks of Semarang. Concurrently, the official mascot for the tournament was introduced under the moniker "Saqur," an acronym for Sahabat Qur'an (Friend of the Quran).

The General Chairman of the Central Java Executive Board for Quranic Development (LPTQ), Yasin Maimoen, clarified that the visual branding intentionally prioritizes the distinct cultural heritage of Central Java and Semarang to operate as a symbol of regional pride. The geometric layout represents core values of cultural conservation, pluralistic diversity, and social harmony that define the character of Central Java.

Meanwhile, the "Saqur" mascot is engineered to personify the spirit of the younger demographic who maintain a close affinity with Quranic philosophy. The character is projected to represent an emerging generation of Indonesian youth who are deeply religious, intellectually sharp, highly creative, dynamic, and ethical.

“This visual identity is expected to serve as a unifying symbol for all competing delegations arriving from the nation's 38 provinces. It perfectly mirrors the structural elegance of Central Java’s indigenous culture wrapped in progressive Islamic values,” Maimoen stated on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

The 2026 National MTQ in Semarang operates under the central theme “Spreading the Light of the Quran in Harmony Toward a Just Golden Indonesia.” The prestigious national tournament is locked to run from September 11 to September 20, 2026. The official reception and database registration of the provincial delegations (kafilah) will be processed between September 11 and 12, 2026.

The grand opening ceremony is scheduled for September 12, 2026, at the Pancasila Simpang Lima Square in Semarang, initiated by a massive cultural parade (pawai ta’aruf) and an institutional welcoming gala.

The core competition cycles and strategic trade exhibitions will run consecutively from September 13 to September 19, 2026. The official closing assembly is scheduled for September 19–20, 2026, supported by an array of public engagement events designed by the provincial administration.

As the central hosting province, the Central Java Regional Government has locked in extensive logistics assets, including dedicated transit fleets for the delegations, customized operational vehicles, security details, and high-spec competitive laboratory venues.

Beyond the core religious recitations, the multi-day festival will feature a large-scale nine-day National Trade Expo. The corporate showcase involves active pavilions managed by all Indonesian provinces, central ministries, municipal governments, state-owned enterprises (BUMN), and regional banks, alongside prominent global philanthropic bodies.

The expo grounds are engineered to accelerate the regional sharia financial sector, housing international-grade displays for Islamic calligraphy, sharia financial products, and an expansive certified halal culinary festival to scale up sustainable tourism in Central Java.

The satellite programs designed to accompany the main event include a national Islamic percussion (rebana) tournament, a specialized halal tour exhibition, an Islamic fashion week, the prestigious Batik Nusantara Award, a macro job fair, and a series of national academic symposiums focusing on religious moderation and sharia economics in the digital era. Additionally, the host committee has structured historical heritage and religious tourism itineraries for the visiting delegations.

Maimoen urged all cross-sector stakeholders to consolidate their resources to ensure the absolute success of the 31st National MTQ. He concluded that the momentum transcends standard competition, serving instead as a vital channel for progressive Islamic public diplomacy, cultural tourism promotion, and national unity.

“Central Java last occupied the host seat for the National MTQ way back in 1979. Therefore, we are welcoming this multi-decade opportunity with immense institutional energy and an absolute commitment to deliver world-class hospitality for all participants and guests across Indonesia,” he concluded.
