Jajang Jahroni becomes Professor of History of Islamic Civilization

Rectorate, UIN News Online – UIN Jakarta proudly announces the appointment of Jajang Jahroni, Chairman of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LP2M), as a Professor in the field of Islamic Civilization History. This prestigious title was conferred through a decree issued by the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, Number 58909 of 2021.

“Effective from August 1st, 2021, Jajang Jahroni has been appointed as Professor in the field of Islamic Civilization History,” the decree states, as quoted by UIN News Online on Monday (09/13/2021).

Jajang Jahroni is a distinguished scholar whose dedication to academia and research has significantly contributed to UIN Jakarta’s academic excellence. In addition to leading LP2M, he serves as a senior lecturer at the Department of History and Islamic Civilization, Faculty of Adab and Humanities. He teaches various courses, including Social Science Theories in History, Cultural Theory, Cultural Heritage and Society, Comprehensive Islamic Studies, Sociology, and Anthropology.

Professor Jajang’s academic contributions extend beyond teaching. He is a prolific writer, translator, and editor, having published numerous scholarly works. Among his notable publications are Radical Salafi Movements in Indonesia, Defending the Majesty of Islam: Indonesia's Front Pembela Islam 1998–2003, and The Political Economy of Knowledge: Sharia and Saudi Scholarship.

His research spans critical areas such as Islam and democracy, Islam and gender, and strengthening Islamic educational institutions like madrasas and pesantren. As a member of the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM), Professor Jajang has conducted impactful studies on the Radical Islam movement, collaborating with organizations like the Indonesian Institute of Sciences and The Asian Muslim Action Network.

Born in Banten in 1967, Professor Jajang’s academic journey reflects his unwavering passion for knowledge. After completing his education at the Cirebon Buntet Islamic Boarding School, he pursued an undergraduate degree in Islamic History at the Faculty of Adab, IAIN Jakarta, graduating in 1991. He earned his master’s degree at Leiden University, focusing on Haji Hasan Mustafa, a prominent Sundanese Islamic figure. In 2015, he completed his doctoral studies at Boston University with a dissertation titled The Political Economy of Knowledge: Salafism in Post-Soeharto Urban Indonesia.

The Rector of UIN Jakarta, Amany Lubis, expressed her admiration for this significant achievement. “This appointment marks a milestone in Professor Jajang Jahroni’s academic career. I hope it will further enhance his contributions to teaching and research in Islamic Civilization History, reinforcing UIN Jakarta’s reputation as a leading academic institution,” she said. (usa/zm)
