Jakarta, UIN News Online - International Adjunct Professor at UIN Jakarta- Prof. Ian Buchanan from the University of Wollongong, Australia attended the seminar and international conference of the Faculty of Da'wah and Communication Sciences (FDIKOM) UIN Jakarta. In session II of the conference which took place at Kristal Hotel on Wednesday (30/10), Prof. Ian gave material on Contemporary Social Movement In Indonesia: Humanities And Cultural Perspectives.
On this occasion, Prof. Ian explained that a social movement does not aim to direct the public to agree with the actions taken during the social movement. More clearly, Prof. Ian explained that social movements sometimes occur because someone likes and dislikes a phenomenon or policy that exists.
“Social movement is not what makes people agree, but more ideological. Sometimes it's more about what people dislike or hate: the same enemy,” explained the professor of humanities, cultural studies, and human geography.
Furthermore, according to Prof. Ian, social movements on social media are explained by Prof. Ian that the media pays great attention to how to collect various data from large-scale platforms. “The media is concerned how to collect data from platforms in a large scale,” he explained.
In addition to Prof. Ian, Prof. Dr. Elsa Clave from the University of Hamburg, Germany also attended the conference, presenting material on Contemporary Social Movement In Indonesia: Media And Social Development Perspectives. According to Prof. Elsa, the development and dissemination of information that is so fast in the times also has an impact on the academic field, that the request to publish research articles is also more and must be fast. This has led to many research articles that are not suitable for publication due to inappropriate data and quality. Therefore, at this time the challenge for researchers is to produce research articles that are fast but still critical.
“The first steps to producing good and interesting research is to know what to research, what to look for, and why to do the research. These questions will eventually lead to a common thread that will produce interesting research. what to look for by asking yourself what the motivation is. Why am I researching it will get a red thread that will become interesting research,” explained Prof. Elsa.
Meanwhile, related to social movement research , Prof. Elsa explained that the basis of the concept of social movement comes from the field of sociology. The agreed definition in this discussion is social movement as a form of struggle movement and is different from collective movements. Therefore, in the scope of social media, social movements have had a lot of influence on life and social order related to political, economic and other policies.
“Social movement is the basis of sociology, why people can move, why people join why the movement can succeed,” he explained.
