Inaugurated as UIN Jakarta Professor, Prof. Nida Husna Charts a New Direction for English Language Education
Harun Nasution Auditorium, UIN News Online – The Open Senate Session of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta officially inaugurated thirteen full professors, including Prof. Dr. Li. Nida Husna HR., M.Pd., MA TESOL, as Full Professor of English Language Education. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. KH. Nasaruddin Umar, M.A.; Rector of UIN Jakarta, Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, M.A., Ph.D.; alongside Senate leadership and members of the academic community at the Harun Nasution Auditorium on Wednesday (30/09/2026).
Prof. Nida Husna's academic journey began with her Bachelor's degree in English Language Education at IAIN Jakarta. Born in Serang on July 5, 1972, the scholar subsequently earned a Master's degree (S2) in Educational Research and Evaluation from Universitas Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. HAMKA (UHAMKA), followed by an M.A. in TESOL Studies from The University of Queensland, Australia. Her commitment to continuous learning culminated in a Doctorate (S3) in English Applied Linguistics from Catholic University of Indonesia Atma Jaya, Jakarta.
Her extensive track record across academia, research, and teaching—which began as an English language instructor in 1992 before officially joining UIN Jakarta's faculty in 1999—served as the cornerstone of her professorial address. In her oration titled “Beyond Language Proficiency: To Develop Independent, Reflective, and Adaptive Learners for Sustainable and Regenerative Futures,” she highlighted that while language proficiency remains an essential foundation, it is not the ultimate end of language education. She emphasized that language teaching must intentionally cultivate three core learner capacities: independence, reflection, and adaptability amidst rapid technological advancements and artificial intelligence.
In her address, she stressed the imperative of safeguarding human agency and responsibility amidst the conveniences offered by educational technology.
“Our greatest success as educators does not occur when students can answer every question we pose. Rather, success is achieved when they continuously ask meaningful questions, make well-considered decisions, adapt to change, and remain lifelong learners long after leaving our classrooms,” she noted.
In addition to her active teaching role across the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programs at the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Teacher Training (FITK) UIN Jakarta, Prof. Nida possesses a robust track record of academic leadership. She served as the inaugural Director of Postgraduate Programs at FITK UIN Jakarta, Secretary of the English Language Education Department, and Coordinator of the English Language Program at the Center for Languages and Cultures (CLC) UIN Jakarta. Nationally and internationally, she serves actively as a reviewer for the TESOL International Association, a judge for the Language Learner Literature Awards at the Extensive Reading Foundation, an editor and reviewer for scholarly journals, and an internal quality assurance auditor at UIN Jakarta.
As a prolific scholar and thinker, Prof. Nida has authored and published numerous academic works ranging from textbooks and modules to digital application ecosystems. Her published books include “Reading for English International Standardized Tests” (Bumi Aksara) and “Extensive Reading: The Power and Blueprint for Literacy and Learning” (Rajawali Press), alongside developing the reading practice application “Speed Up Your Reading Speed”.
Her peer-reviewed journal articles include: Developing Students' Critical Thinking Through an Integrated Extensive Reading Program (TEFLIN Journal, 2019), Embracing Inclusiveness: A Discourse Analysis of Cultural Representation in Indonesian EFL Textbook (Englisia, 2025), and Implementing Kurikulum Merdeka: Teachers' Strategy in Teaching English in Elementary School (IDEAS Journal, 2026).
