Happy National Heroes Day: UIN Jakarta Honors Indonesia’s Heroes Through Reflective Commemoration

Student Center Field, UIN Online News — Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta commemorated National Heroes Day with a solemn flag ceremony that conveyed a vital message: independence was earned, rather than given, by the result of perseverance, courage of the Indonesia’s heroes.

The National Heroes' Day refers to the peak of the Indonesian people's resistance in the Battle of Surabaya which broke out on November 10, 1945, where Indonesian soldiers and pro-independence militia fought against British and Dutch troops who were part of the Indonesian National Revolution.

In his address, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, Prof. Ali Munhanif, M.A., Ph.D., advised younger generation to embody the spirit of their ancestors.

“Since our freedom, we must take inspiration and lessons of our heroes, who sacrificed their lives and souls for Indonesia’s independence,” he affirmed.

He further stated that pursuing knowledge, morality, and tangible contributions to the nation equals to fight for the nation.

“Today, our battle is no longer fought with weapons. For the wisdom we taught becomes the spear so the invaders can hear what we speak. Let our words be the swords,” he encouraged.

Prof. Ali also expressed his hope that the spirit of heroism continues to inspire and motivate individuals to make a lasting impact for the nation.

“May we all keep the flame of heroism alive. Their bravery will be remembered forever. Our heroes are our role models,” he concluded.
