Associate Professor Dr. Hakimah Mohammad Sallehuddin is a clinician, academic, and leader in the field of Geriatric Medicine at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). She holds strong professional qualifications, including a Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine (Malaysia/Nottingham) and Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians, United Kingdom (MRCP UK), which form the foundation of her expertise in the care of older adults.
Dr. Hakimah currently holds key strategic leadership roles as Head of the Geriatric Medicine Unit, Department of Internal Medicine, UPM, and Director of the Advanced Integrated Geriatric Learning and Care Centre (AGiLe) at UPM. She also serves as Coordinator of Elderly Health Care for the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at UPM, reflecting her strong commitment to the education of future medical professionals.
Her research and publications focus on her core areas of interest, including ageing and age-related diseases, orthogeriatrics and bone health, geriatric medical education, and nursing home care. She has published extensively in internationally indexed journals such as Age and Ageing and PLOS ONE, and has contributed chapters to key reference works, including the Oxford Handbook of Geriatric Medicine and national Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) for Osteoporosis and Stroke.
As a Principal Investigator, Dr. Hakimah has led several significant research grants, including the “BOUNCE” project on post-stroke bone health and studies on Advance Care Planning (ACP) among older adults with neurological diseases. She has also served as a co-investigator in projects funded by the World Health Organization (WHO) addressing elderly care during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Her commitment to geriatrics extends beyond the university setting. Dr. Hakimah is actively involved in national committees, including the National Curriculum Development Committee for Subspecialty Training in Geriatric Medicine and as a Permanent Member of the Health Cluster under Malaysia’s National Agenda on Ageing at the Ministry of Health. She is also a Committee Member of the Fragility Fracture Network Malaysia (FFNM) and an Executive Committee (Exco) Member of the Malaysian Society of Geriatric Medicine (MSGM).
Through a combination of clinical expertise, academic leadership, impactful research, and policy engagement, Associate Professor Dr. Hakimah Mohammad Sallehuddin not only educates future physicians and advances the field of geriatric medicine, but also plays a vital role in strengthening healthcare systems for the ageing population in Malaysia.
