Hajatan Tarbiyah 2024: Minister Abdul Mu’ti Highlights the Role of Culture in Modern Education

Main Auditorium, UIN News Online – Indonesia's Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Prof. Dr. Abdul Mu’ti, M.Ed., delivered an enlightening lecture titled “Transforming Education to Uphold Cultural Values in the Modern Era” at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta’s Harun Nasution Auditorium on Friday (22/11/2024). The session emphasized the importance of integrating cultural identity into education to navigate the complexities of modernization.

“Education must provide cultural experiences that help students internalize noble values,” Prof. Mu’ti explained. “These values enable them to face societal changes while staying rooted in their cultural heritage.”

Rejecting the belief that culture impedes progress, Prof. Mu’ti pointed to global examples of success grounded in tradition. “Countries like Japan, China, and India have achieved modern advancements while preserving their national identities and cultural traditions,” he noted. He encouraged Indonesians to embrace their diverse cultural heritage, highlighting the unity fostered by the national language despite over 600 regional languages.

Prof. Mu’ti addressed the evolving role of education, asserting that it is not merely a pathway to employment but a process of human development. “Education equips individuals for life, not just work,” he said. “It is about shaping character and preparing students for the challenges of a dynamic world.”

He emphasized the need for soft skills like adaptability, communication, and problem-solving as essential tools for success in modern society. “These skills are key to navigating the complexities of today’s global landscape,” he added.

Prof. Mu’ti also shared plans to enhance teacher support, recognizing educators as the backbone of the education system. He announced progress on a certification allowance program set to benefit over 600,000 teachers by 2025, pending final approval from the House of Representatives (DPR). “This initiative underscores our commitment to improving teacher welfare and ensuring quality education for all,” he affirmed.

Highlighting the critical role of teachers, Prof. Mu’ti insisted that no technological advancement could replace the guidance and mentorship of educators. “Teachers are not only knowledge providers but also mentors who shape students into individuals of character,” he explained.

He concluded by reiterating the importance of cultural preservation through education. “Indonesia’s rich diversity and cultural values are our strengths. By integrating these into our education system, we can build a resilient and united nation,” he said.

Prof. Dr. Abdul Mu’ti’s lecture left a lasting impression on attendees, inspiring them to view education as a powerful tool for preserving culture while preparing for the future.
