Fulbright Visiting Scholars: Usep conducts international research activity at Duke University

Ciputat, UIN News Online – History of Islamic and civilization lecturer of FAH UIN Jakarta Usep Abdul Matin elected as one of the four world academicians to conduct international research activity at Duke University, North Carolina, starting from September 1, 2019 to February 29, 2020.

Usep, along with Albulenë Kastrat from Kosvoi, Vandana Mahalwar from India, and Magda Szczesniak from Poland will conduct research activity according to their respective fields for the Fulbright Visiting Scholarship program.

Through a short message sent from North Carolina, Usep said that he had arrived at Duke University and met with university leaders. “I was warmly welcomed by the Rector of Duke University Vincent Price as well as the Deans and professors at Duke University.

Usep himself is planned to conduct research related to The Role of the University in Indonesia's Islamic Public Sphere: The Jalaluddin Rakhmat’s Ph.D. Dispute. Through this research, Usep will see the value that must be played by the government in mediating Shia Muslim and Sunni Muslim conflicts in Indonesia based on Jalaluddin Rakhmat's experience when he was a Doctoral student at UIN Alauddin Makassar.

As quoted from the global duke page, fulbright Program began more than 70 years ago, participants have been chosen for academic merit and leadership potential. The scholars are given the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to global scholarship.

Based on Sholarships and fellowships manager at the Duke Center for International and Global Studies, Nancy Hare Robbins, said that Usep's involvement with the three other world academicians in the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program was in line with Duke University's global academic strategic plan.

“In particular, the fulfillment of engagement is a two-way street, where the interaction of world scholars with the Duke community creates a mutually beneficial learning environment,” she said. (usa/zm)
