From Arabic Education to Stand-Up Comedy: UIN Jakarta Alumnus Redefines Digital Da'wah

Rectorate Building, UIN Online News – UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta continues to produce versatile alumni who thrive across diverse sectors, including the global creative economy. A prime example is Muhamad Bachrul Alam, a graduate of the Arabic Language Education (PBA) Study Program at UIN Jakarta, who has gained widespread recognition as an educational content creator and stand-up comedian.

Born on October 5, 1995, Alam has successfully harmonized his academic background in linguistics with digital media production. Through a lighthearted and entertaining approach, he introduces the Arabic language to a broader audience, specifically targeting the digital-native younger generation.

Monikerolled as "The Smiling Teacher," Alam developed his comedic timing through a unique institutional pipeline: a campus-based comedy collective known as Stand Up Indo UIN. This trajectory is highly unconventional in the Indonesian creative landscape, where most comedians emerge from regional or city-based chapters rather than university clubs.

After winning three consecutive comedy competitions within a single week in late 2019, his rapid ascent earned him coveted slots as the opening act for prominent Indonesian national comedians, including Indra Frimawan, David Nurbianto, and Dzawin Nur.

The global pandemic served as a catalyst for Alam to master video editing systems. This technical proficiency led to his breakthrough role in the viral digital series Coki Belajar Bahasa Arab (Coki Learns Arabic), collaborating with prominent media personalities Coki Pardede and Tretan Muslim. The public quickly embraced his relaxed, communicative, and cheerful pedagogical style, cementing his identity as "The Smiling Teacher."

Since his breakthrough, Alam has aggressively scaled his personal Instagram and TikTok channels. His digital ecosystem delivers creative Arabic educational modules ranging from everyday vocabulary tutorials and translations of global pop songs to comedic sketches addressing contemporary social dynamics.

Behind his entertaining digital content, Alam champions the philosophical necessity of building welcoming, open spaces for religious discourse (da'wah). Speaking on the ALF MEDIA podcast, he clarified that his signature concept of "Jamaah Culture" stems from his conviction that faith should coexist harmoniously with cultural diversity.

“We have to analyze the word 'culture' linguistically first. It refers to being civilized and adaptive. Therefore, an integrated 'Islamic culture' is one that embraces cultural expression and respects differences. That is the exact core philosophy I integrate into my work,” he explained.

According to Alam, an inclusive, non-judgmental approach is vital to ensure that educational and ethical messages are well-received by diverse societal layers.

His status in the mainstream comedy industry was solidified in 2022 when he secured a golden ticket to compete in the Preliminary Show of Stand Up Comedy Indonesia Season 10 (SUCI X), a premier national televised tournament broadcasted by Kompas TV.

Expanding his creative portfolio beyond digital media, Alam made his feature film acting debut in 2023, portraying the character Leo in the cinematic release Imam Tanpa Makmum, directed by Syakir Daulay. Alam noted on his social channels that the cinematic experience provided an invaluable laboratory to acquire advanced acting methodologies outside traditional stand-up formats.

Currently, Alam is producing an independent travel documentary series titled Safari Alam. The program follows his journey across various Indonesian regions, exploring unique local traditions, micro-cultures, and grassroots community life using his signature lighthearted storytelling style.

Through his multifaceted creative projects, Alam serves as a prime empirical example of how UIN Jakarta alumni successfully adapt academic scholarship into high-impact digital media, proving that structural education can evolve into relevant, engaging assets for the global digital economy.
