Freeport Commissioner A.M. Fachir at UIN Jakarta Graduation: Between Graduation, Diplomas, and Social Impact

Harun Nasution Auditorium, UIN Online News – UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta once again held its 136th graduate inauguration procession. A total of 569 graduates and invited guests, including families, relatives, and guardians of the graduates, filled the Harun Nasution Auditorium on Saturday (24/05/2025). During the 136th graduation procession, Commissioner of PT. Freeport Indonesia, Dr. Abdurrahman Mohammad Fachir, who is a UIN Jakarta Alumnus, was also present to share his experiences and celebrate the graduation moment with the graduates.

A.M. Fachir conveyed that he was also proud and appreciative of the graduates' achievements at this moment. According to him, the graduation moment is a place where important roles gather. Parents, companions for master's graduates, and most importantly, all lecturers and supervisors as individuals who transfer knowledge and guide the graduates to this point.

“The best way to say thank you is by praying for them, include their names, the lecturers, supervisors, along with your parents' names, because no matter what, you will not be able to repay their kindness and services,” he said.

Besides expressing gratitude, A.M. Fachir advised that with a diploma from a higher education institution, the graduates will pursue their chosen careers. Beyond the diploma given by the campus, a "diploma" can also be measured by real work, impact, and the benefits felt by those around. That work and contribution will give a trademark to a person. Dr. Abdurrahman gave an example with the analogy of bestowing the title of Kyai upon someone.

“A 'diploma' can also be measured by the quantity of work that is proportional to the quality of work in society. When your work and creations benefit society, then society itself will judge you. Like the bestowal of the title Kyai upon someone, that is also a 'diploma',” he said.

Dr. Fachir also shared that he has provisions that always accompany him wherever he steps; there are three things that always become companions in carrying out the roles he takes on, namely; focus, istiqomah (steadfastness), and maximum effort. Dr. Fachir reminded that the magnitude of a result depends on the Almighty. If all efforts have been exerted, then tawakkal (reliance on God) becomes the next step.

“Whatever endeavor we undertake, I always carry my three provisions. First, focus. Second, istiqomah. Third, maximum effort,” said A.M. Fachir.

“'Faa idzaa a’zamta fatawakkal a’lallah' (And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah). These three provisions are the companions that have always accompanied me in my career as a diplomat for 35 years,” he added.

At the end of his remarks, Dr. Fachir advised the graduates who will later contribute to society that position is not the goal. A position is not something to be proud of, because essentially a position is only a means to deliver the widest possible benefit. The higher the position we have, the wider the benefits that can be spread.

“My being a diplomat is a bonus. All the privileges I receive are also just bonuses that are not the goal. The main goal remains to provide benefits through the position and privileges I possess,” he said.

A.M. Fachir is an alumnus of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, which was then still named IAIN. A.M. Fachir completed his studies in the Arabic Language and Literature study program. He serves as a Commissioner of PT Freeport Indonesia, Secretary General of the Indonesian Red Cross, and this year rejoined his Alma Mater UIN Jakarta as a lecturer at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UIN Jakarta. His work serves as an inspiration for the graduates and the entire UIN Jakarta academic community that the values of UIN Jakarta always become the basis for pioneering benefit wherever the name of UIN Jakarta is present.
