FK UIN Jakarta Organizes a Women's Health Webinar

FK, UIN News Online - The Faculty of Medicine (FK) at UIN Jakarta organized a public health webinar on menstrual disorders in women and how to overcome them. This webinar is the 9th installment in a series of health webinars hosted by the faculty of medicine, held on Sunday (30/06/2024).

The presentation on menstrual disorders was delivered by Dr. Gulam Gumilar, an alumna of FK UIN Jakarta and a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology. He began his explanation with the definition and explanation of menstruation in Islam, as found in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 222, which discusses menstruation and the prohibition of sexual activities during menstruation.

Dr. Gulam also explained the process and cycle of menstruation, as well as the various disorders that can occur during menstruation. Polymenorrhea, a menstrual cycle shorter than 21 days, causes women to menstruate more frequently than normal due to hormonal disturbances during ovulation. There are also disorders like oligomenorrhea, where the menstrual cycle is longer, with intervals exceeding 35 days. Additionally, there is amenorrhea, characterized by the absence of menstruation for at least three consecutive months.

"A normal menstrual cycle usually occurs every 24 to 38 days and typically lasts less than 8 days. If it exceeds this duration, it could indicate a prolonged menstrual cycle," said Dr. Gulam.

The diagnosis of menstrual disorders can be determined by factors such as menarche (the onset of first menstruation), which if it occurs too early may indicate issues with the ovaries. In addition to menarche, the menstrual pattern and bleeding during the menstrual cycle can indicate problems with the uterus affecting the menstrual cycle.

Dr. Gulam hopes that the general public can understand the definition of normal menstruation and identify symptoms of abnormal menstruation to raise awareness about reproductive health. Furthermore, he encourages women experiencing abnormal menstrual symptoms for more than three months to promptly consult a doctor for immediate treatment.
