FITK UIN Jakarta Successfully Holds International Conference Integrating Multiculturalism and Literacy in the Educational Landscape

Mahmud Yunus Theater, UIN News Online - The Faculty of Tarbiyah and Keguruan (FITK) UIN Jakarta held The 9th International Conference on Education in Muslim Society (ICEMS) at Mahmud Yunus Theater Room, 3rd floor of FITK on Wednesday (14/08/2024). This event was successful with the theme Integrating Multiculturalism and Literacy in the Educational Landscape, and invited several presenters from various countries such as the United States, Malaysia, and Japan.

The welcome speech by the Chairperson of ICEMS 2024 was delivered by Ummi Kultsum, M.Pd., PhD. She revealed that she really enthusiastically welcomed this international conference event as a form of promotion to the outside world and to introduce world multicultural issues in Islamic views through various studies. 

“I really enthusiastically welcome this international conference because it is a form of promotion and contribution to multicultural issues in the world of literacy and social matters in the educational landscape,” she said.

There were remarks by the Dean of the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Keguruan (FITK), Prof. Siti Nurul Azkiyah, M.Sc., Ph.D., who expressed her gratitude to the participants, presenters and invited guests who had joined this event either online or in person in this theater room.

“This event would not have been successful without the contribution of all partners who have joined this international conference. I also thank the participants and speakers who have joined this event,” said Prof. Azkiyah.

The Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Tholabi, S.Ag., S.H., M.H., M.A., representing Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, M.A., Ph.D., also delivered his remarks and officially opened the ICEMS 2024 event. He revealed that this event was the first step to see various views on multiculturalism, especially in the perspective of education.

Prof. Tholabi after his speech symbolically opened the ICEMS 2024 event and continued with the appearance of the ICEMS profile video.

In the first session, ICEMS was hosted by Atik Yuliyani, M.A. TESOL, which was then continued with the presentation of material by Leslie Moore from The Ohio State University, United States. Leslie Moore gave a discussion on Literacy Practices at Tahfidz in Indonesia with Zulfa Sakhiyya, Ph.D., from Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) and Prof. Dato' Dr. Ahamed Kameel Bin Mybin Meera from Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah (USAS), Malaysia, who attended through a zoom meeting and continued with a question and answer session in this session.

The core of this event was hosted by Hasnan Yasin, M.Pd., who guided the delivery of material by Prof. Shinji Nobira from Aichi University of Education Japan who joined through a zoom meeting with a discussion of Moral Education for Environmental Education. 

In the next material, about the Urgency of Critical Literacy with Prof. Melani Budianta from the University of Indonesia who was present directly in the Mahmud Yunus FITK Theater Room. The event then continued with a question and answer session which was greeted enthusiastically by the participants. 

The last material on Rehlah 'Ilmiyyah as a Faculty to Aggrandize Values and Character Building Across Cultural Diversity was delivered by Dr. Farhan from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia who was also present in person in this theater room. 

The event lasted for 2 days and as a whole discussed multicultural or differences in culture, ethnicity, race, and religion with an educational perspective, as well as discussing how to deal with all these differences.
