FITK UIN Jakarta Holds Online Discussion: Addressing AI's Role in Education

Jakarta, UIN Online News — The Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training Sciences (FITK) at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held an online faculty discussion on "Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education" on Monday (June 23, 2025). This event aimed to broaden lecturers' insights into the rapid development of AI technology and its application in the teaching-learning process.

The event, moderated by Neneng Nurjanah, M. Hum., was attended by lecturers and students, and featured Dean of the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training Sciences, Prof. Siti Nurul Azkiyah M.Sc., Ph.D., as part of the second series of Faculty Discussions in 2025.

In her remarks, Prof. Nurul expressed her appreciation for the event, seeing it as a commitment to academic development within FITK. “Discussions like this are important to maintain our academic spirit so that it continues to develop in line with changing times,” she stated.

Prof. Nurul also highlighted the importance of understanding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in education. According to her, AI can help increase work efficiency and effectiveness, but it still requires a proper understanding of its use.

“If we do not have sufficient ability in using AI, then we will not be able to get the results we want. Therefore, even though AI is available, we still need knowledge and strategy to optimize it,” she emphasized.

The main presentation was delivered by Munasprianto Ramli, M.A., Ph.D., a Chemistry Education lecturer at UIN Jakarta, who presented material titled “AI in Education: Curriculum Development, Educator Readiness, and Ethics.” In his presentation, he stressed the importance of educator readiness and the integration of ethics in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the world of education.

Munasprianto explained that AI has existed since the 1950s and experienced stagnation from 1987–1993 in a period known as the AI Winter. “AI is a field in computer science that focuses on creating systems capable of replicating human intelligence and ability to solve problems,” he explained.

AI, he continued, has four main objectives: Conversational AI, Predictive AI, Generative AI, and Prescriptive AI. In the context of education, AI can be used as a tool in curriculum development, learning applications, and technology integration.

He also presented research findings conducted with BRIN (National Research and Innovation Agency) and several educational institutions, which showed that some teachers and school principals want AI to be a mandatory subject in secondary schools, similar to ICT. Additionally, effective learning strategies in the context of AI include project-based learning, problem-based learning, and integration with STEM methods.

The discussion also highlighted the challenges of using AI in education, ranging from data privacy issues, trust in systems, to implementation costs. Nevertheless, Munasprianto affirmed that the benefits of AI are enormous if used wisely. “AI can be very helpful, but if misused, it will have negative impacts and make students passive. Therefore, teachers and lecturers need to set an example in using AI ethically and responsibly,” he concluded.

Dr. Baiq, in her presentation during the "AI’s For Indonesia’s Future Student" session, explained that the presence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is often perceived as a threat, especially in the world of work and education. However, according to her, this can be overcome if individuals possess strong basic skills (soft skills), such as communication ability, critical thinking, and adaptability, which are then balanced with core skills such as mastering AI technology, Big Data analysis, and market research.

“We don't need to be afraid of AI; instead, we must learn to adapt. The way is by strengthening our basic abilities and mastering core skills such as Artificial Intelligence technology, Big Data analysis personnel, and market research,” said Dr. Baiq.

She also added that AI should not only be viewed as a tool but can also be integrated into education. “AI can be made a subject or part of the curriculum so that our students are able to compete and not just be users, but also creators of technology,” she explained.
