FITK UIN Jakarta and Mendikdasmen Introduce New Learning Concept

Jakarta, UIN Online News -  The Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training (FITK) of UIN Jakarta conducted a national webinar entitled "Deep Learning: Concepts and Implementation" on Monday (17/3/2025), which was attended by more than 4,000 participants, including educators, students, researchers, and ministry staff.

This webinar represents a collaboration among FITK UIN Jakarta, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, particularly the Deep Learning Development Team (TPPM), and the Center for Education and Research Training and Development (CertDev), a division of FITK designated to improve the education, research, and training sector.

It featured the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Abdul Mu’ti, M.Ed.; the Rector of UIN Jakarta, Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, M.A., Ph.D.; the Dean of the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, Prof. Siti Nurul Azkiyah, M.Sc., Ph.D.; and the keynote speaker from the Deep Learning Development Team (TPPM) of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education of the Republic of Indonesia, Nur Luthfi Rizqa Herianingtiyas, M.Ed.

The Dean of FITK UIN Jakarta, Prof. Nurul Azkiyah, delivered the welcoming remarks to inaugurate this webinar. She explained that deep learning would enhance students' competences and literacy, hence elevating the quality of Indonesian education to a worldwide standard.

Additionally, the Rector of UIN Jakarta also strongly supported deep learning as a new approach to learning methodologies. Alongside aspirations for all educational institutions, he also urged the UIN Jakarta community to use and implement this notion.

"The concept of deep learning, along with its innovations, will change the educational paradigm in Indonesia. It is a clever pedagogical approach, while at the same time, it also addresses contemporary difficulties in every scale of the educational sector," Asep Saipudin Jahar commended.

Meanwhile, Prof. Abdul Mu’ti, a professor at UIN Jakarta specializing in Islamic Religious Education, said that deep learning is scheduled for implementation in the 2025/2026 academic year. Therefore, eligible schools are allowed to initiate this program before it will later be implemented as the official national approach in secondary and primary school education.

"Deep learning will serve as a national educational framework. Our first target is to improve the quality of national education and help students reach their full potential," the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education informed.

As the initiator who first introduced the concept to the public, he also explained the background that ultimately led the government to vigorously develop the framework for deep learning.

According to the PISA scores released by the OECD, various studies have examined the phenomenon of schooling without learning, where children attend school yet fail to acquire knowledge, leading to diminished learning capabilities, inadequate foundational knowledge, and problematic literacy.

Given the various criticisms regarding low learning achievements, it is imperative to implement deep learning immediately. This new approach will later solve the problem employed by educators who often poorly stimulate students' interest in learning, exemplified by surface learning and competency-based learning methods.

Next, Nur Luthfi Rizqa Herianingtiyas, M. Ed., presented the main session. He explained that deep learning itself is founded on the basic principles of being aware, meaningful, and joyful. Interestingly, "joyful" does not denotatively mean a learning space filled with laughter but rather a learning space filled with motivating challenges.

"By creating a classroom atmosphere that engages students, we unconsciously put them in a strategic game so that new tactics can emerge. In fact, students can lose track of time and forget that the class period has ended because they are so engrossed in expressing the excitement in their minds," he explained.

The presentation concluded with a Q&A session that immediately sparked active responses from the participants. Many students who were interested in the new innovation were delighted with the material given by the experts in pedagogy.

In response to this, FITK UIN Jakarta will soon open a training program to assist in the creation of lesson plans for deep learning. UIN Jakarta, with CertDev FITK UIN Jakarta, will help to provide various training programs that meet the needs of both educators and education in general.
