First Among PTKINs, UIN Jakarta Establishes Center for Hajj and Umrah Studies
Jakarta, UIN Online News — Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta has officially established the Center for Hajj and Umrah Studies (PSHU), becoming the first State Islamic University (PTKIN) in Indonesia to create a dedicated academic center focusing on Hajj and Umrah. The initiative reflects the university's commitment to addressing contemporary issues facing the Muslim community through research, policy development, and academic engagement.
Dean of the Faculty of Da'wah and Communication Sciences (FDIKOM), Prof. Dr. Gun Gun Heryanto, emphasized that the establishment of PSHU demonstrates UIN Jakarta's moral and academic responsibility in responding to challenges related to Hajj administration.
"This center serves as a strategic platform for conducting research, developing policies, strengthening public communication strategies related to Hajj and Umrah, and enhancing mitigation efforts in Hajj management, particularly amid an increasingly dynamic global environment. Through PSHU, UIN Jakarta is committed to providing more contemporary literacy on Hajj rituals and the Hajj economy for the wider community," he stated.
The establishment of PSHU comes at a significant moment as Indonesia's Hajj governance enters a new phase. Following revisions to Law No. 8 of 2019, responsibility for organizing the Hajj pilgrimage has been transferred from the Ministry of Religious Affairs to the newly established Hajj Organizing Agency (Badan Penyelenggara Haji), with the aim of improving service quality while allowing the Ministry to focus on broader religious affairs.
The inauguration ceremony took place on Monday (13 April 2026) at the FDIKOM Theater Hall and was attended by the Director of Regular Hajj Development, H. M. Afif Mundzir, Dean of FDIKOM Prof. Dr. Gun Gun Heryanto, faculty members, and student representatives.
In addition to the inauguration, the event featured a public lecture for students titled "Mitigating Hajj Administration Amid Global Uncertainty."
Through a recorded video message, Dr. H. Puji Raharjo, M.Hum., Director General of Hajj and Umrah Administration at Indonesia's Hajj Ministry, congratulated UIN Jakarta on the establishment of PSHU. He expressed hope that the center would contribute to strengthening Hajj governance, developing the Hajj ecosystem, advancing Islamic legal perspectives on pilgrimage administration, and promoting evidence-based policymaking through research.
The establishment of the Center for Hajj and Umrah Studies underscores UIN Jakarta's commitment to providing academic solutions to the increasingly complex challenges of Hajj administration while reinforcing the university's role in supporting Indonesia's national strategic agenda through research, innovation, and public service.
